If you want to travel this way and immerse yourself in each place, there is no better way to do it than with a camper. In this article, we tell you which routes you shouldn't miss if you decide to travel around the north of Spain in a camper. Don't miss anything!

How to organize the best route through northern Spain by camper?

If you are planning this trip and want to do it properly, there are some aspects that should be taken into account when organizing it. First of all, you must know how many days you have available to make the trip, which will allow you to adapt the route and choose where to start and where to finish.

Northern Spain offers many possibilities, so it is imperative to set your priorities according to your individual situation.

The best routes for touring the north of Spain in a camper van

In this section, we are going to recommend some of the most outstanding routes to visit the north of Spain in a camper. We want to help you choose the one that best suits your needs, depending on the time you have available:

Galician coast, a route of sensations

At first glance, a route along the Galician coast alone might not seem enough, but nothing could be further from the truth. Touring the entire coastline of this community can take as long as you want. One very interesting option is to start in Vigo, center of the Rías Baixas, and drive along the coast of Pontevedra, Coruña and Lugo until you reach Ribadeo.

If you do, there are some almost obligatory stops along the way: Finisterre, Muxía, A Coruña and its beaches, Ortigueira and Viveiro are places where it is advisable to stop one or two days and see them well. And, if you happen to go during the first week of August, you may be interested in visiting Catoira, where there is a festival to recreate the famous Viking raid on the town

Asturias, beloved homeland

The tour must include a route through Asturias, one of the most beloved communities of our country. In this case, we suggest you start in Luarca, a traditional village where you can see the Colonial buildings and houses found in the area.

Next, we arrive at Cudillero, a beautiful typical fishing village where we recommend you stop for lunch. Afterwards, you can stop at Cabo Vidío to enjoy the Estaca de Bares. A visit to Villaviciosa to taste the cider is another good idea, ending with a visit to Ribadesella and Llanes.

Cantabria and the Basque Country

The third route we propose is somewhat longer, as it covers the communities of Cantabria and the Basque Country, but it is well worth it. Starting in Comillas, Santillana del Mar and Suances, we arrive in Santander, where you can stop for lunch, but we do not recommend spending many more days here. The route continues through Laredo and Castro Urdiales until it enters the Basque country.

The best plan here is to drive inland, from Bilbao to Deba, where you return to the coast. Specifically, to see Zumaia and its famous Flysch cliffs, Zarautz and San Sebastian ending in Hendaye, close to the French border.

What are the best campsites for touring northern Spain by camper?

There are many campsites in northern Spain where you can stop to complete your itinerary. Some of the best known are those of Bayona, Picos de Europa, Joyel, Portuondo and Zarautz. However, it is a good idea, once you have decided which route you are going to take, to decide which campsites on this route have earned the best reviews.
