Discovering Asturias by car: from Colombres to Llanes

The Indianos were Spanish emigrants who traveled to America between the 19th and early 20th centuries and returned to Spain with their wealth. Many of them came from Asturias and, upon their return, built large mansions that have become typical of this region.

In Colombres, a few kilometers from the border with Cantabria, there is an interesting Indiano route with impressive buildings such as the Quinta Buenavista or the Casona Roja.

From there you can visit the beach of Cobijeru (it is an inland beach that is in a cave)

Then the beaches of Ballota and Andrín. Then follow your route to Llanes, one of the most beautiful villages of Asturias and where you can see dinosaur footprints in the area of the cliffs of Tereñes and Playa de la Vega.

Cangas de Onís and Covadonga

The route above will probably take you a whole day, so rest a little before continuing on to discover Asturias by car. On your second day you will visit two of the most important tourist attractions. First of all, the beautiful municipality of Cangas de Onís.

Forget the tourist routes and lose yourself wandering through its streets, you will surely discover very interesting things. Of course, don't forget to visit the famous Roman bridge.

Once the visit is over, hop in the car again and head for Covandoga, which is nearby. Both the Basilica and the Holy Cave await you, two truly spectacular settings.

Ready to continue? Our next destination is the lakes of Covadonga. Along the way, you will find different viewpoints that will provide you with unique views of the area.

At the end of the ascent awaits both Enol and Ercina, two lakes of glacial origin that are beautiful at any time of the year.

The route through Asturias by car continues from Ribadesella to Gijón

Ribadesella is one of the most famous towns in Asturias, and has much to see and discover. If you have time, we recommend you dedicate a whole day to it. You will love its beaches and promenades, but don't miss its historic center or you will regret it.

Some of the most outstanding points of interest are: the beach of La Atalaya, the Paseo del Muelle (today called Paseo Princesa Letizia), the Paseo de la Grúa and the Paseo de los Vencedores del Sella, the hermitage of Guía and the cave of Tito Bustillo which is one of the most important prehistoric caves in the world.

From there you can take the car again and head to Gijón to stroll along its urban beaches, enjoy its viewpoints and visit the popular seaside neighborhood of Cimadevilla.

From Cudillero to Taramundi

We continue on our route and arrive at Cudillero, which is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and one you cannot skip in your visit Asturias by car. It has so much to see that you could easily spend a few hours or even a whole day there.

Write down these six must-sees: the Plaza de la Marina, the viewpoint of La Garita, the route of the viewpoints, the historic center, the port and, of course, the lighthouse of Cudillero.

After the visit, we head for Taramundi, a municipality nestled between valleys and mountains where there is always something different to do. Here you will find one of the most important forts of Asturias: "Os Castros". It is completely excavated and you can visit it. Nearby is Mazonovo, which has the largest museum of windmills in Spain and a rudimentary and curious power plant.

We reach the end of our trip and we are going out in style, dedicating some time to visit Oviedo. The capital has an impressive medieval old town in which the Gothic cathedral stands out. But there are many other points of interest, such as the Fontán square, its three pre-Romanesque churches, the Trascorrales square or the San Francisco park, where the statue of Mafalda is waiting for you sitting on a bench for you to take a picture with her.
