Undoubtedly, this imposing place, designed by architect Frank Gehry, is one of the most important contemporary art museums in Europe. It is certainly a place that has given the city its own identity.

The maritime museum area

Going to Bilbao also means strolling through its incredible maritime museum. It is located in the area near the estuary, and is a unique place to discover the maritime heritage of Bilbao and Bizkaia. It is essential if you are looking to get a closer look at the coastal history of Bilbao, discovering details of its commercial and industrial port, among other aspects.

Museum of Fine Arts

Continuing with the plans that art lovers cannot overlook we find the Museum of Fine Arts. Here you can enjoy works by artists such as Picasso, Murillo, El Greco and Goya, among others. It is located in the Doña Casilda Park and can be visited every day except Tuesdays, when it is closed.

Bilbao Estuary

Another unique experience is a walk along the Ría de Bilbao. This estuary divides the city into exactly two parts, thus differentiating the old town and the Ensanche. It is an estuary that crosses the Zubizuri bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava, and leads to the funicular area of Artxanda.

In short, a perfect place to enjoy a nice walk and unbeatable views.

La Ribera Market

Precisely in front of the estuary, there is an old market, started in the fourteenth century, and redesigned in 1929 under an art-deco style, which is the Mercado de la Ribera. It is a place of unique beauty where you can taste the typical gastronomy of Bilbao and, of course, its pintxos.

Santiago Cathedral

The cathedral of Santiago is located in the Plaza de Santiago, a few meters from the aforementioned Ribera market. It is an imposing construction of Gothic style dating from the 14th century. Undoubtedly, if you want to enjoy this type of buildings, you cannot miss the opportunity to visit this sacred place.

The old town

The so-called old town of Bilbao is mainly made up of seven streets that you cannot miss. The oldest street in the city, Somera Street, is where you can enjoy the best gastronomy and great tapas. Also noteworthy are Tendería, Artekale, Belostikale, Carnicería Vieja, Barrenkale and Barrenkale Barrena streets. Visiting them all is worthwhile to get to know the charm of this city up close.

Its plazas

Bilbao has plazas of great beauty. One of them is the so-called Plaza Nueva, a neoclassical site with no less than 64 arches and a wide range of bars and restaurants. Another place not to be missed is the so-called Miguel Unamuno square, which has a monument to the writer and where the house where he was born is located. From there you can climb the Calzadas de Mallona, which lead to Etxeberría Park and the Basilica of Begoña.

Arriaga Theater

If, in addition to visiting Bilbao's museums and enjoying its gastronomy, you want to visit its theaters, you can always go to the Arriaga Theater. Undoubtedly, this place located in the old part of the city is a spectacle in itself.
