Mallorcan gastronomy has many typical dishes that are worth a try. If you are planning on spending a few days on the island, there's nothing better than taking a route through some of the most outstanding points of interest and tasting the products and recipes that define this region at the same time. So, take note of this gastronomic road trip around Mallorca.

Palma: the heart of the island

This experience starts in Palma, the island's capital. After spending the morning visiting spots like the cathedral of Santa Maria or the Royal Palace of the Almudaina, you probably need to recharge your batteries. One of the best ways to do this is to enjoy some tapas at the Mercat de l'Olivar. Here, among all the fresh fish stalls, you can try local cheeses and artisanal cold meats. Enjoy sobrassada, camaiot or butifarrón with some bread and Mallorcan olive oil.

If you fancy a delicious dessert, or you get a little peckish in the afternoon, Ca'n Joan de S'Aigo offers visitors its iconic ensaimada with almond ice cream, a classic treat on the island.

In the evening, have dinner in a traditional celler. This is an establishment where you are immersed in the atmosphere of an old wine cellar and you can enjoy hearty typical dishes like the frito mallorquín.

Serra de Tramuntana: the second stop of this gastronomic road trip through Mallorca

If you want to see as much of this World Heritage Site as possible, start your second day as early as you can. Take your car and head to Valldemossa. Once there, you can't miss a stop for a breakfast of coca de patata and coffee. This way you can get your energy levels up to face the day ahead.

The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range is bursting with beautiful places to see, and you can stop at various viewpoints and locations. If you go outside the summer months, it can be a very quiet trip.

For lunch, you can make a stop in the municipality of Deià. Here you will find options for all tastes: everything from small establishments with traditional food to Michelin-starred restaurants. You can enjoy the Mallorcan gastronomy and, at the same time, impressive sea views from any of these spots.

You should be in Sóller to watch the sunset, a town with a French-style atmosphere that delights all who pass through here. You can take in the sunset with an orange ice cream in the square, and then taste some delicious Sóller prawns, known for their intense flavour.

Northern part of the island

The third day is for you to get to know the northern part of Mallorca and some of its most famous localities. A visit to Pollença is a must. If you arrive on Sunday, at the weekly market you can find local products like oil, honey, cold cuts and aromatic herbs. However, if there's no market on, there are still many small establishments offering typical products of the region.

Lunchtime is a good time to try one of the island's most famous dishes, arroz brut: a rice stew accompanied by meat and vegetables. In Alcúdia there are a number of restaurants that have it on their menu.

To round out the day you can go to the Formentor viewpoint and enjoy a picnic of Mallorcan cold cuts before returning to your accommodation.

Centre of the island: a key stop in your gastronomic road trip through Mallorca

The fourth day of the trip is the time to try some of the most typical dishes of the island, if you are yet to do so. You will pass through Inca, which is considered the 'celler capital of Mallorca', a perfect place to taste the frito mallorquín and the porcella rostida.

There are other important municipalities in the area such as Binissalem. Wines with denomination of origin are made here from the Manto Negro grape, native to this region.
