The local markets in Mallorca are one of the island's great attractions during the summer months. In the summer season, the classic local markets are more crowded than ever with locals and visitors alike.
Why do we visit local markets in summer?
For most tourists, local markets are one of the main leisure activities during the summer. This is because the markets are a showcase of local culture, the ideal place to sample traditional island products and enjoy authentic Mallorcan handicrafts.
In the local markets you can find everything from typical Mallorcan products such as sobrasada to leather goods, decorations and handcrafted jewellery made by local artisans. In addition, the bucolic and festive atmosphere of the Balearic summer invites you to enjoy the markets at a relaxed pace.
The best local markets in Mallorca
Each town on the island has its own markets, and they all have a special charm. If you can't visit them all, here are the top recommendations:
Sineu Market
Held on Wednesdays all year round, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is located in the Plaça des Fossar and around the historic centre. It is not to be missed, because it is the oldest in Mallorca (some references date it all the way back to the 12th century).
One of its unique curiosities is that it is one of the few markets where livestock, including chickens, turkeys and even goats are for sale. In addition, there are a number of stalls full of local products and handicrafts.
If you want to enjoy it at your leisure, it's best to get up early. This way you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the most authentic essence of the Sineu market.
Inca Market
Every Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Inca market is held on Avenida Gran Vía Colón. It stands out for being one of the largest on the island, and is especially famous for its leather products available at very competitive prices.
If you like local fashion and footwear, this is one of the best places to get your gear. What's more, there are also many stalls dedicated to food, handicrafts and plants.
Pollença Market
On Sundays, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a market with almost 300 stalls opens in the Plaça Major and its adjacent streets. Although there are other markets on the island, this is probably the busiest.
As well as strolling around the market, you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the town and stop for a coffee when you get tired.
Santa María del Camí Market
Another Sunday market, but in this case open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is found in Plaça Nova and specialises in organic and sustainable products. If you are seeking local flavours and food that can be traced to its origins, this is the market for you.
Alcúdia Market
Held on Tuesdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During the summer (from June to the end of September) there is an evening edition from Wednesday to Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. While the weekly market is located in the old town, the night market is on the seafront.
The Alcúdia market is one of the largest on the island, with a wide range of food, leather, clothing and souvenirs. The evening market is a great tourist attraction, because there is also live music.
Puerto Portals night market
The Sunset Market is held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings throughout July and August in Calvià. Unlike the others in this list, it is located in a luxurious environment and is more exclusive. Perfect for those seeking fine jewellery, designer fashion, art and fine dining.
Even if you don't buy anything, it's worth a visit to enjoy the bohemian atmosphere, with live music by the sea.
