Tenerife is the most visited of all the islands that make up the Canary Islands archipelago. No other place in the country can boast a volcano over 12,000 feet (3,700 meters) high and that can be seen from almost any corner of its orography. This is not all that awaits you on this island, however, so today we tell you what you should visit in North Tenerife.

Places to visit in North Tenerife

Although it is an island, Tenerife is relatively large, and to see everything, you will need about a week. A noteworthy feature to take into account when organizing your trip is its relief. Unlike other islands such as Gran Canaria, here there are a multitude of volcanoes, which means that the roads are full of curves and are not flat

For this reason, and despite the fact that readily available public transport has excellent connections, if you want to take advantage of the time and be able to reach the most inaccessible places, we recommend you rent a car in North Tenerife. This way you will not be dependent on bus schedules and you can get into areas where there are no stops.

But what are the places in North Tenerife that are waiting for you?

Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the most visited towns on the north coast. Its beaches have black sand, like Playa Jardín, and just at the entrance, there is another perfect for surfing, Martiánez. Next to this is the Lago Martiánez saltwater pool complex, which was designed by the famous architect César Manrique.

Other sites of interest are the Botanical Garden, with an impressive collection of native flora; the pools of San Telmo next to the main promenade, and its streets and squares, which abound with cobblestone floors and wooden balconies typical of the island.

Garachico

Garachico is a picturesque village located in a rocky bay. In the past, it was the main port of Tenerife, until it was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1706. Today, this history is just a memory and the air is calm and peaceful. In addition to the colonial architecture, it is worth visiting the natural pools of El Caletón, which, like the rest of the so-called pools on the island, are formed by volcanic lava.

La Orotava

Another of the most precious jewels in North Tenerife is the town of La Orotava. It is famous for its traditional Canarian architecture and manicured gardens. La Casa de los Balcones, a 17th century mansion with intricately carved wooden balconies, is a perfect example of the island's architectural heritage. Other places you should visit are the Jardines del Marquesado de la Quinta Roja, with its exuberant plants and fountains. In the surrounding area, the mountain slopes are distinctly green, due to the abundance of banana plantations.

Punta de Teno

Punta de Teno is located in the northwest corner of Tenerife. Accessible only by winding roads, this site offers breathtaking views of the ocean and cliffs. However, it is necessary to check the access points, since there are limitations to vehicles for the protection of the area.

Faro de Teno, a historic lighthouse that has guided sailors for decades, is the highlight. And from there, there is the highly recommended possibility of getting on a boat that runs along the coast to take in the impressive Los Gigantes cliffs.

Mesa de Mar

Mesa del Mar is a small corner in the north of Tenerife, known for its natural pools carved into the volcanic rock. It is the perfect place to enjoy the sun and the sea in a quiet and peaceful environment. The beach of La Arena has been awarded the Blue Flag on several occasions, so it has all the services.

Parque Rural de Anaga

On the northeastern tip of the island is this lush tropical forest, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It is the area of the island with the greatest biodiversity, and is home to many native species, both flora and fauna. The trails are well marked and allow you to explore deep ravines, volcanic peaks and laurel forests. In a matter of minutes, you can go from volcanic rock with reddish tones in full sun to immersing yourself in humid forests. Roque Bermejo and Cruz del Carmen or Afur are some popular routes.

The number of road trips in Tenerife is almost infinite. So if you want to enjoy an unforgettable adventure, rent a car in Tenerife with OK Mobility.
