The Canary Islands form a spectacular region where there is something to see everywhere. If you want to really get to know them, we recommend that you forget about the typical tourist itineraries and discover them at your own pace. Doing routes in Gran Canaria will enable you make the perfect trip.
We are going to propose a circular route that will take you around the whole coastline, but we recommend that you go off the beaten track and get "lost" on the roads, because you are bound to find wild spots and charming towns that don’t usually make it into the tourist guides. Remember to always choose the the most suitable car for the type of trip you are going to make.
From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to the Garden of Jardín Canario
We start the route in Las Palmas, a provincial capital with all facilities and designed for tourists to have a great time and lack nothing. Besides the holiday attractions, there is also plenty of cultural life, with outstanding visits like the Canarian Museum or the Elder Museum of Science and Technology.
Of course, you should not miss the spectacular beach of Las Canteras, or enjoy the Canarian cuisine in the restaurants along the promenade. From there you can take the car and head inland to visit the Jardín Canario park.
There are 27 hectares that are free to visit, where you can see from typical palm trees of the Canary habitat to Mexican cactus. Keep your eyes peeled and you are sure to see some lizards sunbathing on the rocks.
The road to Teror
We continue our routes in Gran Canaria by heading into the interior of the island. Teror is a half hour drive from Las Palmas and a very popular destination among the Canary Islanders, because here there is the Virgen del Pino, their patron saint.
In addition to visiting the Basilica of the Virgen del Pino, this is a good place to take a walk on one of the many interesting hiking trails in the area, which are suited to all levels.
Routes in Gran Canaria to the northwest coast
We now go back to the circular route and head towards the northwest coast of the island to see its steepest slopes. On the way you can stop in towns like Agaete, a village that still earns its livelihood through fishing. And very close by is the Tamadaba Natural Park.
Take advantage of the fact that you are going by car to go to Risco Faneque, the highest cliff on the island. It drops 1,000 meters down to the sea, so take a careful look and you are bound to get some spectacular photos.
Roque Nublo Rural Park
No trip to Gran Canaria is complete without a visit to this incredible natural site. If you have time, we advise you to make an extended stop in one of the beautiful towns in its interior and spend a few days there.
Your car can take you from one lookout point to another quickly, so you can appreciate some of the greatest features of this landscape, such as Roque Bentayga or Roque Nublo itself.
Routes to the south of Gran Canaria
We continue our tour of the island and now go south, along the coast again. We can stop at Puerto de Mogán, a rather quiet place whose canals have earned it the nickname of the Venice of the Canary Islands. The sunsets from this location are absolutely unforgettable.
A little before arriving you will pass by the Molino Quemado. It was once one of the largest on the island and is now perfectly restored, so it is worth a lengthy stop and a visit.
Maspalomas Dunes
After a fantastic few days of touring Gran Canaria, you are about to arrive at your destination. And we have left a great tourist attraction for the end: the dunes of Maspalomas. This protected natural area gives us the feeling of being in the middle of a real desert.
The huge golden sand dunes contrast sharply with the blue of the sea, making this region one of the most beautiful of the island, and one of the most visited of all the islands.
Now you are back in a tourist resort, be sure to visit key places such as Playa del Inglés or Meloneras. Take the opportunity to take a dip, sunbathe and rest before returning home.
