Although this Autonomous Community is far from being one of the largest in the country, there are so many places of interest that it will give you the feeling that it is. If you are going to visit it, here are 10 places to see in Cantabria that you can't miss.

10 places to see in Cantabria

It is often said that Cantabria is infinite because of its diversity of landscapes, countless charming villages to visit, its cliffs, coastline and its gastronomy, because you will need to recharge your batteries between one sight and another, and there are few places as good for your palate as this!

That's why we at OK Mobility recommend that you don’t think twice about renting a car if you want to make the most of every day of your trip. In addition to greater freedom, you will be able to reach places that would otherwise be impossible. Do you want to know what they are? Let's take a look at them!

Fuente Dé Cable Car

The Picos de Europa are the largest National Park in the country and take up parts of Cantabria, Asturias and Castilla-León, although the mountain range extends from Galicia to the Basque Country, practically all over northern Spain. This Community contains practically all of the Eastern Massif, or Ándara, and besides its geological importance, its mixed forests, meadows and fauna are surprising. You can take this cable car to contemplate the whole of the Liébana Valley, at an altitude of 1850 meters.

Castro Urdiales

And from the highest mountains we go to the coast, and specifically to this coastal town that was once a small fishing village. Among its monuments, you will be surprised by the Medieval Castle and the church of Santa Maria. Do not hesitate to cross the stone bridge to go see the hermitage of Santa Ana or stroll along the maritime avenue. It is also a perfect place to taste the gastronomy.

Santillana del Mar

If you have to choose just one town from all of them, it should be Santillana del Mar. Its name would suggest a flat place near the sea, but it is neither. It is so beautiful, however, that you will overlook these fibs. The historic center is remarkable, with the cobblestone streets of Carrera and Juan Infante and medieval buildings such as the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana and the towers of Merino and Don Borja.

Altamira Cave

A short distance from Santillana del Mar, there is the Altamira Cave with their incredible cave paintings. It was discovered in 1868 and has been continuously excavated and studied since then. However, crowds always have a negative impact on sensitive places, so since 2001 visits take place in an exact replica of the original cave.

Comillas

Comillas is another place to see in Cantabria that you cannot miss. Its group of monuments is surrounded by nature, and has a strong air of modernism that it will remind you of Catalonia. In fact, there is a work of Gaudí known as El Capricho, with his unmistakeable style, but there are also others like the palace of Sobrellano that are comparable to his work.

Viewpoint of Santa Catalina

To get a panorama of the place, we must go back up to the heights to another viewpoint, that of Santa Catalina. From here you can see the gorge of La Hermida, with the Picos de Europa in the background. This town is known for its 18th century thermal spa, so take the opportunity to visit it!

Potes

If you like hiking, Potes is an ideal destination, because it stands at the crossing of the four valleys that belong to the region of Liébana. In addition to hiking trails, you can go climbing and mountain biking, although we recommend that you also visit the village, with its stone streets and bridges. And if Castro Urdiales was perfect for fresh fish, here the star dish is the cocido lebaniego.

Argüeso

This Cantabrian village offers a different view of life in Cantabria. It is an archaeological park that recreates what life was like in the Iron Age and is based on excavations in the area. You will visit cabins and see countless objects.

Mount Cabezón

If you like trees, you will love this forest of redwoods that reach to more than 35 meters in height. Planted in the 1940s, when they grew the wood was no longer of interest, so they have remained here for the enjoyment of those who visit them.

Santander

And we couldn’t finish the list of places to see in Cantabria without its capital, Santander. Its historic center had to be rebuilt after a fire, but what really attracts visitors are its beaches, such as the Sardinero. In addition, you can rent your car from Santander

If you want to have time to visit all these places and many more, book your rental car with OK Mobility now!
