The German region of Bavaria has several picturesque towns and villages that could have been lifted straight out of a fairy tale. And, although they are not all equally well known, they have one thing in common: their proximity to Munich, the capital of Bavaria and one of Germany's major cities. In this article, we will tell you which are the most beautiful towns and villages near Munich worth visiting.

The most beautiful towns and villages near Munich that you should visit

Thinking of spending your holiday in and around Munich? If so, we suggest you rent a car in Munich to get closer to the fairytale scenery you will see below.

Füssen

The first stop on our tour of the beautiful towns and villages near Munich is Füssen, a town of just over 16,000 inhabitants, located at the foot of the Alps. It is found about 75 miles from Munich, although distances in Germany feel shorter due to the large motorways connecting each city.

Füssen's most characteristic feature is Neuschwanstein Castle, said to be the inspiration for Disney's iconic castle. In fact, due to the huge influx of tourists, we recommend booking your tickets well in advance.

Berchtesgaden

The second town on our list is located about 90 miles from Munich and is famous for being the summer residence of Adolf Hitler. Beyond its historical connotations, Berchtesgaden is a unique photographic scene.

It is situated at the foot of Mount Watzmann, the third highest mountain in Germany, which imposingly towers over the town. Here you can also visit the salt mine and the Königssee lake, of glacial origin, the third deepest in the country.

Oberammergau

Another of the most beautiful villages near Munich is Oberammergau, about 55 miles to the southwest. One of the most iconic things about this village is the set of facades adorning the houses, many of which are decorated with murals with scenes from folk tales, such as Hansel and Gretel or Little Red Riding Hood.

And, 25 minutes from this village, we recommend you visit the church of Wies, listed as one of Germany's most beautiful churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, its rococo style will etch itself into your retina for a long time.

Rottach-Egern

If you like mountain scenery, a visit to the town of Rottach-Egern, 30 miles from Munich, is a must. In fact, to get there you have to cross the Tegernsee Lake, which is almost 4 miles long. To the south of this lake lies Rottach-Egern, a small town framed by the beauty of the lake and the grandeur of the mountains behind it.

Burghausen

On the Austrian border is Burghausen, a town where the most characteristic feature is its castle. This medieval fortress is over 1,000 metres long, earning it the title of being the longest in Europe.

As well as the castle, a stroll through the streets contemplating the buildings of its historic centre, all in pastel colors, is a good way to spend the day.

Mittenwald

This village near Munich is known as the Village of a Thousand Violins because of its long-standing tradition of violin production.

And, as in the other places we have mentioned, in Mittenwald you can also take in a multitude of facades painted with different illustrations.

In this case, most of the motifs relate to alpine traditions, as the village is located in the Karwendel Nature Park.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The last town on our list is also the furthest from Munich, some 150 miles to the northwest. However, it is one of the most popular, as one of the houses you will see there served as inspiration for Disney's Pinocchio. It is also part of the so-called Romantic Road through the heart of Bavaria.

In general, its colourful wooden houses, cobblestone floors and Renaissance-style palaces offer an architectural ensemble that is difficult to find anywhere else.
