If you want to discover Morocco's Atlantic coast, with its miles of beaches and cities full of history, don't miss this driving tour from Casablanca.

The allure of Morocco's Atlantic coastline

Touring the Moroccan Atlantic coast is a journey steeped in history, tradition and nature. There are more than 600 miles of beaches open to the ocean, ports with a passion for fishing and cities where you will note both the colonial past and the Arab and Berber essence. Along this coastline, there are large cities such as Rabat and Casablanca, but also quiet seaside towns and villages. And if you are a fan of water sports, there are great spots for surfing.

But given the distances between these places, the best way to explore this area is by rental car. You will enjoy freedom from timetables, stops at your favourite places for as long as you like and hidden gems that you are unlikely to reach with public transportation.

If you also want facilities and the best conditions, opt for OK Mobility. You can pick up the car in Casablanca and drive along the coast. And at the end of your trip, return it in Marrakech

Driving tour from Casablanca

The driving tour from Casablanca takes you southward following the Atlantic. The essential stops on your trip are:

Casablanca and the Hassan II Mosque

There could be no better starting point than Casablanca, the most cosmopolitan city in the country. Although it is a modern city, it's worth spending a few hours at its main attraction: the Hassan II Mosque. It is one of the largest in the world and rises practically out of the ocean. We also recommend a stroll along the Corniche promenade.

Rabat, an elegant capital

Rabat, Morocco's administrative capital, is less than two hours away by car. The most important points of interest are the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohamed V and the Kasbah des Oudayas, with white and blue architecture. As well as learning about its history, in Rabat you can relax on its quiet beaches.

Kenitra and the Merja Zerga reserve

A little further north is Kenitra, a less touristic city, but surrounded by nature. Nearby is the Merja Zerga lagoon, which is a nature reserve where migratory birds, such as flamingos and herons, stop on their way south. If you like to venture into the great outdoors and don't just want to see the coast, these wetlands will captivate you.

Asilah's blue charm

If you continue north on your driving tour from Casablanca, the trip takes you to Asilah. This town is popular for its whitewashed medina with colourful murals, but also for its relaxed atmosphere due to its proximity to the sea. The city is also famous for its cultural festival and the presence of artists from all over the world.

Larache and its Hispanic roots

Nearby is Larache, a place where you can still sense the Spanish imprint in its architecture and daily life. The fishing port here is one of the liveliest in the area, so if you like gastronomy, and fresh fish in particular, eat at the restaurants by the sea.

The port of El Jadida

On your way back to the south of the country, stop at El Jadida, renowned for its Portuguese citadel which was declared a World Heritage Site. The subway cistern and the walls overlooking the Atlantic have been preserved, reminders of the strategic importance of the city over the centuries.

Oualidia and its quiet beaches

Further on is Oualidia, famous for its protected lagoon and oysters. This small coastal town is the perfect place to relax, swim at quiet beaches and enjoy a meal with fresh seafood.

Safi, ceramics and surfing

Your next stop on the driving tour from Casablanca is Safi. As well as being popular among surfers, it is also a handicrafts hotspot, since there is a tradition of pottery here. It is one of the best places to buy handmade pottery and surf, specifically in Lalla Fatna.

Essaouira, the finishing touch

The route ends in Essaouira, a coastal city with a walled medina, declared a World Heritage Site. It has narrow streets, artisan workshops and squares where there are always people. The most iconic image is the fishing port and its blue boats. Its waters are as good for a relaxing dip as they are for kitesurfing.

The Atlantic coast of Morocco is a route that will let you see some of the country’s best towns and cities. Rent your car in Casablanca with OK Mobility and get ready for an unforgettable journey. If you prefer, you can continue on to Marrakech and return your OK Mobility car there. Do you have yours yet?
