Wondering what to see in Casablanca? It is the largest city in Morocco and the country’s economic and commercial hub, so it is worth spending a few days of your trip there.
There are other more touristy destinations, like Marrakech or Fez, which eclipse Casablanca, but it is a modern city full of history and culture in its own right. It has French-inspired architecture, a great urban buzz and an iconic waterfront promenade. If you are going to make a trip to Morocco, here’s what to see in Casablanca and the most important stops.
Hassan II Mosque
The Hassan II Mosque is arguably the most iconic symbol of Casablanca and one of the most impressive mosques in the world. It is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and has an almost 700-foot minaret that makes it the tallest in Africa.
If you enjoy admiring architecture, this is an essential stop. It brings together tradition and modernity with its carved cedar ceilings, marble floors and a retractable roof. It is also one of the few mosques in Morocco where non-Muslims are allowed to enter.
What to see in Casablanca: La Corniche
La Corniche is the name given to Casablanca's promenade, the perfect place to stroll, unwind and enjoy the views. It is lined with restaurants, cafes and luxury hotels, so it is a perfect seaside boulevard for watching the sunset or just enjoying the nightlife.
The Habous neighbourhood
Another superb spot to see in Casablanca is the neighbourhood of Habous, also known as the new medina. It is a mixture of traditional Moroccan architecture and French urbanism. Here you can stroll through its compact streets, visit spice and handicraft markets or, if you are a fan of books, visit the famous Porte d'Anfa bookstore.
Casablanca Central Market
If you like gastronomy and want to immerse yourself in the local culture, a stop at the Central Market is a must. You will find fresh products, including fish, spices and traditional sweet treats. But you can also try authentic Moroccan food in the small restaurants lining the market.
Mohammed V Square
You might have heard of Mohammed V Square, and this is another place to see in Casablanca. It is known as the administrative heart of the city and a meeting point for tourists and locals alike. It is surrounded by art deco buildings, such as the Palace of Justice and the Prefecture. It is also a great example of the French influence on the city's architecture.
What to see in Casablanca: Rick's Café
When they travel, many people like to visit places they have seen in their favourite movies and TV shows. If you're one of them, Rick's Café is a great restaurant where you can have lunch or dinner. Nothing has been shot there, but the design is like the legendary film Casablanca and recreates the film’s atmosphere. It has a vintage decor, piano and a menu with international cuisine.
Church of the Sacred Heart
Casablanca Cathedral was built in 1930 and is also a good example of neo-gothic and art deco architecture in Casablanca. It no longer functions as a regular church, but it has an imposing structure and enormous stained glass windows. Any lover of history or architecture has to make a stop here.
Mahkama du Pacha
This palace located in the neighbourhood of Habous that we have already mentioned is worth a visit because:
- It is an architectural jewel that blends Arab-Andalusian style with French influences.
- It is currently used as a courtroom and official reception room.
- Its interior is decorated with mosaics, wood carved ceilings and marble columns.
- It is one of the most beautiful buildings in all of Casablanca.
