Spain is full of landscapes that stand out for their beauty and history. There are as many ways to discover them as there are people in the world, because beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. However, one of the best ways to travel is to do it at your own pace, stopping at every place that catches your attention and without pressure. Below, we describe the best routes to travel in southern Spain in a camper van. They are bound to bowl you over!

What should you take into account when touring southern Spain in a camper?

Before planning any route, be it in the south or the north of Spain you must keep in mind what you want to remember from this trip. It is not the same if you are more inclined towards the beach or the mountains, or if you want a combination of both. You should also think about whether you want a more rural route through nature or you prefer to discover the history or gastronomy of each city.

Of course, it is also very important that you think about how many days your trip will last. When planning, you should not only take into account the route you are going to take, but also the time you are going to spend on the road and in the rest places.

The routes we propose to travel through the south of Spain in a camper

Tropical Coast

The Costa Tropical, another name for the coast of Granada, is a good place to start your trip. On the road you will enjoy a landscape of tropical crops, with the blue sea on one side and the white peaks of the Sierra Nevada on the other.

Salobreña is one of those places where you have to make a stop. You will be amazed by its impressive castle, but also by the Albaicín and Brocal neighborhoods. If you like to see the sea and go from beach to beach, we recommend you to do the Senda Mediterránea, a camper route just five kilometers long between ravines and cliffs.

Other perfect cities to visit in the south of Spain by camper are Motril and Almuñécar. Moreover, the latter city is known for its caves and is also a reference area for water sports enthusiasts. Don't miss the opportunity to visit La Alpujarra, the Sierra Nevada National Park and even the city of Granada.

Malaga and Almeria

The Costa del Sol and the Costa de Almeria are two of the most popular in southern Spain and, curiously, are quite different from each other. When touring Malaga you can opt for the more classic destinations, such as Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmádena, or take a detour into fairytale landscapes.

Nerja is one of the must-see towns, as are the cliffs and beaches of Maro. Frigiliana should definitely be on your route, as it is one of those white villages in Malaga that stand out for its food.

In Almeria, one essential stop is Cabo de Gata, a place that also has easy access and facilities for caravans. We invite you to visit the village of San Miguel de Cabo de Gata, lose yourself and enjoy the beaches of San José, as well as the famous beach of Playa de los Muertos and the town of Nijar.

Cordoba and Seville

The landscapes on the camper route through Seville and Cordoba are radically different from the previous ones. We advise you to discover The Subbetica Greenway in Córdoba, a 120-kilometer route that used to be the route of the Tren del Aceite (Oil Train). Its landscape will surprise you, with its castles, caves and bridges.

Of course, the city of Cordoba is another mandatory stop because of all the history it contains. You should visit its narrow streets, its squares, its Cathedral and other sites of tourist interest, such as the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos.

Seville has a special color and that is why it is another of the places that cannot miss on your route. Its historic center has famous sights such as the Giralda, the Torre del Oro, the Setas de Sevilla and the Plaza de España.

The best campsites to spend the night if you visit the south of Spain in a camper van

One of the best campsites to spend the night in Granada is Camping Playa Poniente, very close to Motril. In Almeria, there are many options near Cabo de Gata, such as Aguamarga Camper Park or Camper Park Cabo de Gata, to enjoy spectacular scenery.

If you opt for the coastline of the Costa del Sol, Camper Area Rincon is a fantastic option in the province of Malaga. The Carlos III campsite in Cordoba is a good option due to its proximity to the city center, while in Seville the same is true of the Puebla campsite.
