What to see and do on a trip to Granada

Granada is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. Enjoying it will be an experience and you can do it for less than you think. Here is a list of places not to be missed, which are free or very affordable.

The Albaicin district: a must on your trip to Granada

The Albaicín district is so beautiful that it was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984. It is an old Arab neighborhood located on top of a hill, with a network of streets, white houses and very marked arabesque style that make it especially unique. Strolling through its streets is an experience that will not cost you anything.

Mirador de San Nicolas

You can find the lookout point of St Nicolas without leaving the district of Albaicin. It is a reference point for the watching the sunset with the Alhambra as a backdrop.

The Cathedral of Granada

It is not widely known that the tombs of the Catholic Kings lie in the Cathedral of Granada. It was Isabel herself who ordered the construction of this cathedral near the most important buildings in the city: the Madraza, Alcaiceria, Curia and the Archbishop’s Palace. It also has relics with their own cult, like the Queen’s crown and the King’s sword. It is open to visitors from Monday to Sunday. Opening hours are 10:00 - 18:15 from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays from 15:00 to 18:15.

The Alhambra and the Generalife are a must on your trip to Granada

You can't visit Granada and not go to the Alhambra. Although it is true that this experience will not be free, it is worth visiting one of the most important Arab masterpieces in the world. The Alhambra was the royal residence of the first monarch of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.

Within the Alhambra we find, among others, the Generalife, Yannat al-arif. It is a villa with gardens that was once a place where Muslim monarchs went to relax. When booking your ticket for the Alhambra you can make sure that it also includes the Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces, the Generalife, the Palace of Charles V and the baths of the Mosque.

It is important that once you know the dates of your trip, you should get your tickets for the Alhambra as soon as possible if want to go. This is something you can do easily through their website and will avoid prevent you finding that there are no passes left in the ticket office for the day you will be there.

Alcaiceria

The Alcaicería gives its name to a group of narrow streets that currently house a market selling handicrafts. In the past it was the site of the silk market. The Alcaicería is an area full of charm, because it is decorated with Arab motifs.

The Old Madrasa

The Old Madrasa was once a Koranic School. It housed the largest library in the peninsula in the fourteenth century thanks to the approximately 60,000 books it contained, but they were burned by the Inquisition. However, the Arabs hid a Koran from the 13th century in a small mosque inside and walled it up. It is a room that was discovered only a few years ago, in 2013, and is now regarded as a small treasure. Its importance lies in the fact that it is the only surviving copy of the Qur'an from that period.

Sacromonte

If you want to visit the famous caves of Granada, you will have to go to this area, which is also considered one of the cradles of flamenco. Its streets are lined by the whitewashed houses and caves where families still live today.

Enjoying its cooking

Granada is famous throughout Spain for the generosity of its delicious tapas. Its hospitality, in terms of value for money, means you should not hesitate to taste the typical food of the area.
