Of the inhabited islands in the Balearic archipelago, Formentera is the least explored by visitors. However, there are a great many spots that delight all who pass through here. Because of its size, a road trip around Formentera is the best way to discover the island.

On this occasion, we propose a trip that takes you from lighthouse to lighthouse: from the lighthouse of La Mola in the east to the lighthouse of Cap de Barbaria in the south.

La Mola: the starting point of your Formentera road trip

This lighthouse is one of the most iconic spots on the island, located on a cliff about 120 metres high. It is still fully operational and a privileged enclave to enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean. If you visit it very early in the morning or late in the evening, the sunrises and sunsets here are unbeatable.

Near this area you can visit the village of El Pilar de la Mola. During the high season, it has a curious hippie handicraft market on Wednesdays and Sundays. And while you're there, don't leave without trying typical dishes like octopus or ensalada payesa (rustic salad).

Migjorn and Es Caló

From La Mola, take the car and head west. Along the way, you can stop at Migjorn beach, a vast sandy area extending over more than three and a half miles. If you visit the island out of season, here you will find a haven of peace and tranquility.

A few miles further along is the pretty fishing village of Es Caló de Sant Agustí. In its small port you can still see the traditional wooden boats that are so typical of Formentera. One of the neat details of this area is that the beaches have small rocks, which makes the landscape different from other parts of the island.

Sant Ferran and Sant Francesc Xavier

Sant Ferran de ses Roques was a refuge for artists and hippies in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite the passage of time, it has retained its bohemian charm and it is easy to find cosy establishments where you can enjoy a coffee and live music.

A little further west is Sant Frances Xavier, the island's capital. Undoubtedly, one of the most important buildings in the city is the church of Sant Frances, which was originally conceived as a fortress to protect the population against pirate attacks.

This can still be seen in details such as the gate covered with iron plates, a simple undecorated facade and a single nave. In fact, on the outside you can still see the gap that once housed a cannon.

Be sure to stroll through the picturesque streets of the capital to soak up its relaxed atmosphere. When it's time to recharge your batteries, you'll find plenty of bars to choose from in the square.

Heading north on the road trip around Formentera

After this stop, it's time to head north. Your next destination is the Ses Salines Natural Park, a protected natural environment with salt flats, dunes and dreamlike beaches. Right here is the famous beach of Ses Illetes, considered one of the best in the world.

On the other side of the peninsula is Llevant beach, with a wilder air and also a little quieter. If you walk a little further north, you will find the isthmus of Es Trucadors. It is a strip of sand that allows you to see the island of Espalmador.

Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse

From the northern tip we head south to finish the route. Along the way you will find an arid and solitary landscape, which almost makes you feel like you are on another planet. At the end, the Cap de Barbaria lighthouse, one of the symbols of Formentera, stands on a cliff.

Nearby is the Cova Foradada, which leads you to a natural viewpoint over the cliff. Undoubtedly, it is the perfect place to enjoy the sunset and put the finishing touch to your trip.
