The Balearic Islands are a perfect holiday destination. While Ibiza, for example, is associated with partying the night away, touring Mallorca with the family is a great plan.

It is the largest of the Balearic Islands and has it all: beautiful and quiet beaches, charming villages, nature, good food and perfect activities for all ages. Getting around Mallorca with your family is easy if you travel by car, because you can reach the more unknown and less crowded coves.

If you go with children, you can spend the day in a cove with crystalline waters, discover subterranean caves and end the day watching the sunset from a viewpoint. But you will also find castles, water parks and open-air markets. Want to know all the must-haves for your holiday?

The best beaches in Mallorca for families

It doesn't matter if you are a big fan of the beach or not, on a family getaway to Mallorca you simply have to reserve a day to go for a swim. The island is full of coves with shallow waters, easy access and all the required services nearby. Take note of the following:

  • Playa de Muro: Located in the north of the island, it is quite extensive, with fine sand and a very calm sea, almost like a natural swimming pool. It also has wooden walkways, showers, lifeguards and bars nearby. You can spend the whole day there.
  • Cala Mondragó: Found in the southeast of the island and within a natural park. The best option is to travel there by car and you can rest assured that the trip is worth it, because you will find beautiful surroundings and crystal-clear waters. Little ones can play freely here and, if you are up for it, there are quite easy hiking routes through pine forests.
  • Santa Ponça or Cala Mayor, in the southwest, are also good options. You will generally find a family atmosphere, shaded areas and all the necessary services.

You will find bars and restaurants in each of these areas. Mallorca has quite a varied gastronomy, with dishes that even the little ones will love, such as cocas de trampó and homemade ice cream. But adults will also be able to try some more gourmet options.

Cultural visits and castles

If you visit Mallorca with the family in summer, you might feel like the sun and the beach are all there is. However, there are many other places with a lot of history that are worth visiting. For example, you can visit castles, convents or villages with a rich history.

An essential stop is Castell de Bellver, in Palma. It is circular, which is very unusual, and offers incredible views of the city. Children love to walk the halls, climb the towers and feel like the heroes of their favourite stories.

Another spot with a great deal of charm is the Santuari de Lluc, in the middle of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range. If you prefer mountains to the beach, here you can spend the day, walk through the gardens, visit the basilica and try a typical dish in the surrounding area. There are even hiking trails designed for families. And if you feel like something a little different, head to the village of Valldemossa, because you will feel like you are in a fairy tale just walking through its streets.

Other activities to do in Mallorca with the family

There are many more things to do in Mallorca for the whole family which both adults and children will enjoy. One of the best plans is to visit the Caves of Drach, in Porto Cristo. They are easy to make your way through, even if you go with children, they are well lit and at the end there will be a small concert with classical music and illuminated boats.

Another option is to take the Sóller train, an old wooden train that crosses the valleys and orange groves from Palma to Sóller. It's like taking a trip back in time with incredible landscapes and the possibility of taking beautiful pictures along the way.

And if you are looking for a thrill, you can spend the day in a water park, such as Aqualand in El Arenal or Western Water Park, in Magaluf. As well as the slides and attractions, there are also specific areas for children, wave pools and relaxation areas for adults. They have it all!
