Despite the thousands of tourists that come to the south of Portugal every year, there are still many quiet corners in the Algarve region. Among these small paradises are the marvelous beaches of Faro. Today we will enter this haven of peace, where it is really worth getting lost.

Touring the best beaches of Faro

Faro is the gateway to the Algarve and its capital. It also separates the mass tourism of Lagos, Albufeira and Portimao from the untapped wild and authentic gems of the eastern tip of Portugal. The peculiar geography of the area, where the sea meets the Ria Formosa, has created a labyrinth of canals, islands, marshes and sandbanks that make up a fascinating landscape. Between the lagoons, estuaries and the Atlantic Ocean, the beaches of Faro, surrounded by protected natural environments, are pure beauty.

The beaches of Faro are characterized by long strips of soft golden sand. And for their waters, they are the warmest in the country, ranging from the clearest turquoise blue to the deepest indigo. They are quiet, but there are days when there are great waves for windsurfers, kitesurfers and parasailers. So, while this corner of the Portuguese coastline invites you to relax, you can also enjoy a very active vacation.

Faro Beach

Faro beach stretches for almost five kilometers around the island of the same name. It is one of the most popular beaches in the Algarve. You can easily get there by car by crossing a long bridge that crosses the nature park of the Ria. An endless series of dunes combine with channels and islets in an area with an irresistible charm. Among the beaches of Faro, this one especially enjoys regular swell throughout the year, making it a very seductive spot for surfers. Try canoeing (basic level) and don't leave without enjoying a 'lingueirão' rice (the exquisite razor clams typical of the region).

Culatra Island Beach

Among the enormous galaxy of beaches in Faro, the main beach of Culatra Island is quite exceptional. And its visitors are mostly Portuguese; crowds are a non-existent phenomenon and you can swim in salt and fresh waters at the same time. In addition, the islet is inhabited by fishermen and has only about 750 residents. There is no more genuine experience. Culatra can only be reached by boat, and its crystal clear waters are ideal for snorkeling. While it really is impressive to watch the sunset from its silky sands, make sure you don't miss the last ferry back.

Barreta Beach

In the domains of Faro there is an island (Barreta) where there is nothing at all. You will only see the sea, tremendously calm and transparent, golden sand and very few humans, most of them concentrated on observing birds and mollusks. Because 'Ilha Deserta', as it is also known, is, literally, a desert island, full of the wildest nature. Because the few tourists who come here do so for its aura of sanctuary where they can escape from the urban noise and fury. It is definitely one of the beaches of Faro that you cannot miss. You can only visit it by boat. Remember to bring food and drink, as there are no services or infrastructure in these seven kilometers of sand and marshy banks.

Ancão Beach

Unlike Barreta, Ancão beach has good access by car and on foot, bars and restaurants, showers and toilets, lifeguards and all possible amenities. It is located in Faro's Golden Triangle, which includes some of the most exclusive resorts in the area. Despite this, it manages to remain immune to the crowds, unlike most of the Algarve coastline. It is, therefore, one of the most outstanding beaches of Faro. Its waters are placid and invite you to try paddle surfing or kayaking. Don't miss the opportunity to try the best 'Bolas de Berlim' (Portuguese doughnuts) in the country, as they are sold there.

The beaches of Faro are small treasures and, at the same time, the best surprises offered by the least-known Algarve. Rent your vehicle in Faro with us and tour the Portuguese Eden. Your safety and comfort are fully guaranteed.
