However, this dreamy corner is mainly known for its airport. It is the main communication route to the Algarve.
Everything to see in Faro
Faro, unlike other cities in southern Portugal, is exempt from urban overcrowding. In this sense, it is doubly attractive because it is possible to enjoy its beauty and, in addition, to do so in a quiet environment. You couldn't ask for more. In addition, Faro has a very interesting cultural attraction because it is home to the University of the Algarve. All this, together with its attractive historic center, make it the ideal place to enjoy its calm and relaxed atmosphere, away from the queues and the hustle and bustle of the big cities.
And not only this, Faro is a city known all over the world for its port or marina, as well as for the natural park of the Ria Formosa. The historic center or Vila Adentro is surrounded by an ancient wall that can be reached by crossing some arches. And in this space are some of the wonders of Faro. Cobblestone streets surrounded by white facades decorated with details and flowers. You can breathe peace just by taking the first steps.
And, naturally, in this environment you have to admire the wall and the entrance arches that we mentioned before. The walled enclosure is oval in shape and dates back to Roman times. The wall has survived attacks by English corsairs and an earthquake. However, its watchtowers have stood the test of time. There are also squares, cafes, museums and churches inside that are worthy of admiration.
St. Thomas Aquinas
In Faro everything is history and tradition. If you want to know what to see in Faro you have to admire the Arco da Vila. It is one of the ancient medieval gates that stands out for having a small niche in which is the figure of St. Thomas Aquinas. On the other side, there is the Arco de Reposo surrounded by two defense towers. This was considered the most vulnerable point of entry. And, according to legend, King Alfonso III rested in this area after conquering the city.
And, of course, a visit to the cathedral is a must. The locals call it Sé de Faro and it was built in 1521. Like many buildings of the time, it was built over an ancient Roman temple. For this reason, it has different architectural styles and is the seat of the Diocese of the Algarve. If you go there you have to climb the tower because there is a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding area.
Chapel of the Bones
If you do not know what to see in Faro, we recommend the Chapel of the Bones or Capela dos Ossos. This marvel is located in the northern part of the city.
