How to plan your driving tour through inland Spain

People often forget about the wonders of this country. For this reason, an increasingly popular option is renting a car and travelling around inland Spain. What's more, this kind of trip always has something to amaze you.

Here are some of the most beautiful inland towns and villages that are well worth a visit, and that can form part of your next trip.

Mogarraz

This village near Salamanca is one of those that best preserves its traditional civil and military architecture. It is also located in the heart of the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park, which gives it a natural setting of stunning beauty. In fact, in 1998 it was declared a Historic-Artistic Site.

One of the most unique things about this village is that many of its houses have portraits of people who have lived in the village, which today are part of the decoration of the houses.

Alquézar

At the foot of the Huesca Pyrenees lies the village of Alquézar, which offers a view straight from a postcard. At the top stands the imposing Santa Maria Collegiate Church, declared a National Monument almost one hundred years ago. Afterwards, the village follows the natural line of the canyon within the Vero river valley.

As well as the cultural aspect, Alquézar is a great destination for the variety of activities offered in the natural environment of the province of Aragon and for its hiking trails.

Almagro

This town near Ciudad Real is known, above all, for its corral de comedias (courtyard theatre), where plays are still performed today. In fact, it has gone down in history as one of the birthplaces of theatre. However, its documented origin dates back to the 13th century, when it was the administrative capital of the Military Order of Calatrava.

Beyond a visit to the corral, Almagro has other important tourist attractions, such as the porticoed main square, the palace of the Counts of Valparaíso and various ancestral homes.

Letur

The village of Letur, in Albacete, lies in the heart of the Sierra del Segura. Its most characteristic feature is the way it is built, on a totally vertical cliff on top of a hill. Likewise, in Letur you can see remains from the Paleolithic period, such as cave art and archaeological sites of great historic value, although its peak came during the Andalusian period.

Albarracín

Teruel hides another of the most charming towns in inland Spain, Albarracín. Sitting at an altitude of over 1,100 metres, its entire architectural complex is worth visiting. The cathedral, noble house-museum and Territorio Dinópolis, a large exhibition space with fossils, make Albarracín a perfect destination to spend a weekend.

Castrillo de los Polvazares

A little over 3 miles from Astorga, Castrillo de los Polvazares has established itself as the leading village in terms of the Maragata culture. Its cobblestone streets, colourful arched gates and the carriages that decorate them make this small village one of the most visited in the province of León.

It is also the birthplace of the traditional cocido maragato stew, which can be tasted in one of the many local restaurants. In fact, in several establishments this is the only dish on the menu.

Briones

This medieval village, in the north of La Rioja, is unique for the hill that extends over the Ebro River forming a steep slope, located over the river.

And, of course, it is full of vineyards and vineyard walls, stone constructions that were historically used to protect the vineyards during the hardest time of the year.
