Montenegro is one of the smallest and most intriguing countries in Europe, but at the same time it houses beautiful landscapes that are difficult to find elsewhere. One of them is the bay of Kotor,a capsule of beauty that is located on the Dalmatian Coast and is often referred to as the southernmost fjord in Europe.

And since the most beautiful things in life come in small doses, this bay has an area of just 30 kilometers. However, in this small territory Montenegrins, Albanians, Bosnians and Serbs live together, as well as different cultures, languages, customs and religions. The best way is to travel this rugged coastline by car, as this will allow you to make all the stops you need and not miss any of its charms.

Herceg Novi, a must-see in the bay of Kotor

We suggest you start your tour in the town of Herceg Novi. It is a village with a touch of the medieval, cobblestone streets and classic craft stalls selling local products. The old town is one of the most charming places in this city and you will find it hard to miss the fortress of Kanli Kula. Moreover, its amphitheater offers fantastic panoramic views of the entire bay of Kotor.

Other places worth a visit are the Orthodox Church, the Sea Fortress and the Spanish Fortress, which is so named because in the sixteenth century, for one year, the city of Herceg Novi belonged to Spain.

Risan

Following the route along the bay of Kotor we come across Risan. However, the views between Herceg Novi and this town, one of the smallest in the area, are the most impressive of the entire route. Upon arrival you will find a small town that although it is not one that stands out for its beauty, it does have some places that are well worth visiting.

It is the oldest settlement in the Bay of Kotor and therefore is a place well known for its mosaics. In the past it was a seafaring village and that is why Risan is completely surrounded by crystal clear waters. We recommend a stop at one of its beaches, which are very quiet and allow you to enjoy the climate of Montenegro. If you prefer a livelier plan, the port area is full of bars.

Perast, a Venice-style town in the bay of Kotor

On the way to Perast you can make several stops to take in the scenery or take pictures. This city is popularly dubbed 'the Venice of Montenegro', but not precisely for its canals, but for its temples, architecture and Venetian palaces. On the seashore is the church of St. George, one of the most impressive places in the bay of Kotor.

This small municipality has less than 500 inhabitants and is located in the valley of the fjord, a perfect place from which to contemplate the beauty of the area. It is also a city designed for tourists, as traffic in the city center is restricted. The best option is to lose yourself in its streets and its charms.

The Islands of St John and Our Lady of the Rocks

Before reaching your route through the bay of Kotor’s final destination, two large islets can be seen, which can be reached by boat from Perast. These are the islands of St John and Our Lady of the Rocks and reaching them is one of the most common activities in the area.

The first island has fantastic views of a Benedictine monastery, while the second island has a church called Our Lady of the Rocks. The views it offers are another of its strong points, while the turquoise waters surrounding it complete the impressive scenery.

Kotor

Kotor is the last stop on this tour. This town is one of the most important in the bay of Kotor, as it owes its name to it. It has been declared a World Heritage Site and stands out for its medieval essence. What's more, a five-kilometer wall surrounds the city and hides small treasures, such as the Venetian-style Doge's Palace or the Cathedral of St. Nicholas.

It is the perfect place to lose yourself in its cobblestone streets, its stone palaces and all the local artisan workshops. Going to Kotor is like taking a trip back in time. And to finish the route in style we recommend climbing the mountainside to reach St John’s Fortress and enjoy another of the great sights of the area.
