One of the advantages of traveling in Europe is that, if you rent a car, you can cover many kilometers in comfort and take advantage of a short break to visit more places. Today we propose a route through Montenegro, a country of volcanoes, with really interesting cities and where there is no shortage of beaches and lakes.
What to see on a tour of Montenegro?
This country is overlooked when we decide to visit the Balkans, because the beaches and the natural parks of Croatia, the historical and architectural heritage of Greece or the tragic past of Bosnia and Serbia re well known.
However, if you decide to make a trip through Montenegro, we guarantee that you will not regret it, because it has treasures as precious as those of these countries. If you need proof of this, here is a suggestion for your trip! Start your route by car!
Herceg Novi
This coastal town is a great starting point for a route through Montenegro, as it serves as the entrance to the bay of Kotor. Its architecture reveals the presence Venetians and Turks in the past, with attractions such as its fortress or Herceg Stjepana square, although the best of all is to stroll along its bay, with a smaller number of tourists than its neighbor Kotor.
Perast
Before reaching the aforementioned town, which is the biggest tourist spot, there is Perast, which is also on the bay and has a historic center with ancient maritime villas from Venetian times. Besides strolling its streets, you should take the opportunity to visit the island of Saint George or Our Lady of the Rocks. They are a monastery and a sanctuary to the Virgin of the Rock, respectively.
Kotor
The next stop is Kotor, a relatively small city, but one which has managed to be named a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Its historic center is spectacular, and it reached its heyday between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, due to the trade and its sailors. Don’t miss the city walls, the views from the castle of Saint John, the churches of Saint Nicholas and Saint Luke or the cathedral of Saint Tryphon.
Budva
The next stop, if we continue heading south, is Budva. Here the views change, and you will realize it as soon as you see the yachts in the harbor. This town is known for its nightlife options andis considered the Miami of this country. It became a tourist and residential destination for Russians, Ukrainians and Scandinavians. Its historic center, or Stari Grad, has Roman-medieval style cobblestone streets, and if you are looking for beaches, try Jaz to the north and Becici to the south.
Cetiña
Leaving the coast behind, we move inland on this route through Montenegro. Cetiña is the former capital of the country and was the area of greatest splendor during the years of development. Some evidence of this are the Rector's Palace, where you can learn more about its monarchy, or the various museums in the city, such as the National Museum of Montenegro.
In the center are the squares with cafés and pedestrian streets, which are less popular with tourists, and therefore very quiet. And if you feel like seeing something spectacular, go to the Njegos Mausoleum, located on top of the mountain that gives the country its name, in the Lovcen Park, from where you will have breathtaking panoramic views.
Podgorica
This is the capital of the country, so you cannot miss it on a route through Montenegro, although if you do not know anything about the city and don’t look for information, you will probably leave thinking that it is one of the ugliest, not only in the country, but in all of Europe. With a little more than 80 thousand inhabitants, we advise you to go to the tourist office in Independence Square, where they will tell you how to get to the most charming area.
In its old part, called Stara Varos, you can visit the Clock Tower, some 11th century mosques and an Ottoman fortress. Although many buildings are seriously in need of renovation, this is one of its charms. It is also interesting to walk along the banks of the river, which, in warmer weather, becomes the city’s beach. Here you can finish your route or continue to the Ostrog Monastery, if you want more.
