The Cantabrian coast stretches for more than 170 miles and here you will find a host of incredible beaches of all kinds, from the most touristic and well known to some more discreet ones. For this article, we have compiled the best beaches in Cantabria that you can visit if you head to 'La Tierruca'.

Beaches in Cantabria that you cannot miss

Cantabria has more than 90 beaches scattered along its coastline, each with its own unique features. Whether you're looking for a more urban beach or a more unspoiled and wild one, you are sure to find one that fits the bill.

Remember that, if you are going to spend a few days in this area, you can rent a car in Santander to get around with ease and discover its best beaches. In this article, we propose 7 options.

Playa de Covachos

This beach, just 6 miles from Santander, is one of the most photographed of the entire Cantabrian coast, and no wonder. However, it is not among the most crowded, and you must take into account that accessing it is a little complicated. However, it is very much worth your while.

When the tide is low, the beach joins the Castro islet, which allows you to take a walk into the sea itself and enjoy this unspoiled corner of Cantabria, which is actually an ancient river valley.

Playa de Oyambre

If you are looking for a more accessible beach, Oyambre is an excellent option. A stretch of more than a mile of sand is found next to the mouth of the Ría de la Rabia, between San Vicente de la Barquera and Comillas. It is also considered one of the best preserved beaches in Cantabria.

And, interestingly, the 'Yellow Bird' landed here, the first transatlantic flight that crossed from the United States to Spain.

Playa de Los Locos

Some beaches in Cantabria are perfect for surfers, and Playa de Los Locos, very close to the Suances lighthouse, is one of them. It is a small 500-metre cove accessed via a staircase.

Once there, surfing is one of the best activities, since the sea is usually quite rough. We also recommend contemplating a sunset from this enclave.

Playa de la Arnía

Playa de la Arnía is known as the most iconic beach of the Costa Quebrada. Located in the municipality of Piélagos, it is here where we can see the famous Urros de Liencres, small vertical cliffs that have been created as a result of erosion, and that today form a really impressive rocky set.

Playa de Berellín

Between Pechón and San Vicente de la Barquera is Playa de Berellín, one of those corners that you never come across by accident. And, if you rent a car, the destination is well worth the trip.

The most beautiful thing about this beach is its relief, composed of karstic formations covered with vegetation that turn into small coves at low tide. What's more, there is no mobile phone coverage, so it is the perfect place to disconnect.

Playa El Sardinero

The words 'beach' and 'Cantabria' inevitably lead us to El Sardinero, the best known in the area for being located in the city of Santander. Precisely for this reason, all along the beach you will see different buildings in a typical nineteenth- and early twentieth-century style.

This beach is split into two, commonly known as Playa Primera and Playa Segunda. The former is located closer to the La Magdalena Peninsula, while the second is more extensive.

Playa de Trengandín

This is one of the largest beaches in Cantabria at almost 2 miles long, and is located in Noja, next to the Santoña Marshes. This beach is best seen when the tide is low, and the dark rock formations are exposed. And, if you are lucky, you might see a whole bunch of crabs.

Enjoying everything the beaches of Cantabria have to offer is much easier if you are free to move from one to another, and discovering different beaches a few miles apart.
