El Jadida
We will start our route about 60 miles south of Casablanca, in a city that surprises as a result of the remarkable Portuguese legacy that has remained there. Here you can visit the fortress of Mazagan, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and which offers incredible views of the Atlantic.
Of course, your visit to El Jadida would not be complete without a stroll around the medina, where you will see European-style houses. When you get tired of sightseeing, you can go to Sidi Bouzid beach and relax as you sunbathe or go surfing.
Azemmour: a must-see city near Casablanca
The good thing about Morocco is that you can easily travel around the country by car and enjoy the Marrakech-Merzouga route. But there is another interesting route if you travel south from Casablanca.
Just 10 miles from El Jadida is Azemmour, a city that exudes the country’s essence on all four sides.
Its walled medina is lesser-known and less visited than other cities, but by no means any less special. What's more, a unique experience awaits if you dare to "get lost" in its narrow streets. Another superb activity is a walk along the river. Whether on foot or by boat, you can marvel at the beautiful blue and white painted houses that line it.
The street murals are, without a doubt, one of the main tourist attractions of this city. But if you prefer something more classical, you can visit the ruins of the Portuguese fortress and the Zaouia of Moulay Bouchaib.
Moulay Abdellah
You won’t have to travel far to reach the city of Moulay Abdellah. Its zaouia is a prominent pilgrimage site that preserves its traditional architecture with tiled courtyards and fountains.
Here you can also visit the ruins of its ancient mosque and the minaret of the Almohad period. If you want to see more, a walk along the coast will allow you to find vestiges of ancient constructions that reflect this region’s rich history.
Oualidia
Located around 125 miles from Casablanca, this is a perfect destination if you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy the local gastronomy. In fact, this city is known for its oysters, which are considered the best in the country. Finding a restaurant specialising in this seafood dish with beautiful views of the sea won’t be a difficult task.
One of the main natural attractions of this location is the lagoon, a protected area where water sports can be practiced. And don't miss the beaches with calm waters, perfect for the whole family, particularly great if you are travelling with children.
Ben Slimane, another of the most outstanding towns near Casablanca
Ben Slimane is a great spot on your route if you are a nature lover. It is less than 40 miles from Casablanca and is surrounded by eucalyptus and pine forests, which makes this enclave a perfect place for hiking.
Its very mild climate means you can enjoy a pleasant walk in the forest at any time of year.
This town is also well known for its vineyards. In fact, it is one of Morocco’s main wine producing regions, and you can visit a number of different wineries to taste their wines.
Settat
While not as touristy as the other places we have mentioned, this city located 60 miles from Casablanca will steal your heart if you are a fan of quiet places with a strong agricultural character.
In the Bab el-Mrissa square you will find the typical gathering of markets where local products are sold and also interesting pieces of craftsmanship. A perfect place to buy a souvenir from your trip.
On the outskirts of the city is Jbel Tazekka, a natural area ideal for those who love hiking. If you want to walk through an authentic agricultural landscape that is not too physically demanding, you can't miss it.
