Dreaming of a road trip around Dakar? The capital of Senegal is a spectacular destination full of contrasts. A city where you will find everything from bustling markets to paradisiacal beaches. If you want to explore this region in depth, check out the itinerary we have designed for you.
Independence Square, the starting point of this road trip around Dakar
Independence Square is the administrative, financial and social hub of the city. It’s where government institutions, banks and top class hotels are located.
At this point, we recommend parking the car and visiting the square and its surrounding streets on foot. That way, you can better appreciate the French architecture and immerse yourself in the daily life of the city. Once you have taken in the sights, it is time to start the route.
Gorée Island
The road trip begins by driving to the port of Dakar to take the ferry to Gorée Island. This enclave has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is a great spot to learn more about the region’s history.
Gorée Island was the epicentre of the African slave trade for several centuries. During your visit, the House of Slaves and its "Door of No Return" is a must, a spot that evokes many emotions and that should be treated with the utmost respect.
Beyond its sad history, the island is a charming place that surprises with its cobblestone streets, colonial houses and craft markets.
Almadies
The road trip around Dakar now takes us to one of the most modern areas of the region. Almadies is an exclusive neighbourhood located at the tip of the peninsula, popular for its beaches and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
After exploring the neighbourhood a little bit, get back in the car and go to Pointe des Almadies. It is the westernmost point of the African continent and a very popular area for tourists. However, it is not usually too crowded, so you can enjoy the tranquility of the sea while enjoying a fresh seafood dish in one of its many restaurants.
African Renaissance Monument
If there is one place you cannot miss during your visit to Dakar, it is the African Renaissance Monument. You can get there in about 15 minutes by car from Almadies.
It is a huge bronze statue standing over 160 feet tall (taller than the Statue of Liberty) and represents the rebirth of the African continent after colonisation and slavery.
At the base of the monument is a museum where you can learn more about the history of Senegal. You can also reach the top (via the stairs or the lift) and enjoy a panoramic view of both the city and the ocean.
Sandaga Market
After your visit to the monument, it is time to return to the centre of Dakar to discover the most authentic part of the city. The Sandaga Market is a bustling and somewhat chaotic place, but it is perfect for immersing yourself in what life is like here.
It is also a good place to buy souvenirs, especially jewellery and handicrafts. Remember, however, that haggling is a common practice in this type of market.
Medina and Great Mosque
From the Sandaga Market you can reach the Dakar Medina in minutes, a neighbourhood that allows you to get a better understanding of local life and where you will find the Great Mosque.
It is one of the most important mosques in the country, and has a 220-foot high minaret that immediately catches the eye.
If you wish to go inside you may do so, but please note that you must comply with the dress code for Islamic holy sites.
Pink Lake, a must-see destination on a road trip around Dakar
About 25 miles from Dakar is Lac Retba or Pink Lake, named after the curious pink colour of its waters. This phenomenon is caused by the high concentration of salt in the water and the presence of bacteria, which generates a red pigment.
In this area you can enjoy different activities such as going on boat rides, observing the work of salt extraction or experiencing the buoyancy of the water. You can also buy cosmetics and handicrafts where salt plays a starring role.
On your way back to Dakar, you can take the Corniche, one of the most beautiful coastal roads in this region.
This road trip around Dakar will take you to natural sites, historical areas and also the most cosmopolitan places of the city. It will undoubtedly be an experience you will never forget. Will you need a rental car to get around the city? Don't worry, rent a car in Dakar with OK Mobility.
