The Alpujarras

The Alpujarra is a well-known region in this province and is home to several villages of whitewashed houses in the mountains. In addition to their beauty, some, like Lanjarón, are known for their medicinal waters, but all can boast a delicious local gastronomy. If you don’t have time to spare, aim for Capileira, Pampaneira, Bubión or Portugos.

Los Cahorros, in the Monachil river

This valley lies in the interior of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, and is one of the favorite hiking and climbing routes in the province. The landscapes along the Monachil River are fascinating, but so is the erosion of the water on the mountain walls. This ecologically rich area includes stone walkways, a 63-meter suspension bridge and vertical cliffs.

Castril River

If you enjoy these experiences, another place to see near Granada with a similar natural attraction is the Sierra de Castril Natural Park trail, which runs along the river of the same name. When you go down, you reach an old power plant cut into the rocks on one side of the riverbed, then continue along a wooden walkway over old railroad tracks and enter a gallery of 70 meters with a balcony from where you can see a waterfall.

The Roman Villa of Salar

In the area of Canuto, next to the national road A-4155, a construction belonging to the high imperial period, in the second century AD has been discovered. Although it is still being excavated, so far remains have been found with mosaics and even the face of what seems to have been its owner, a merchant or a public official.

The cave of Las Ventanas, another point of interest to see near Granada

In the municipality of Píñar, you can visit the only open grotto in the whole province. Although the tour is longer, you will be able to see half a kilometer of the Cueva de las Ventanas. As its name suggests, it has 300 apertures that let light in so that visitors can enjoy the rooms with stalactites, stalagmites and lakes. Its attractions do not end there, as there is also a Neolithic burial site and a hyena den. And if you like the experience of being inside a cave, the area of Guadix and Baza offer accommodation in cave houses.

Gorafe Geopark

The Coloraos desert is another site to see near Granada that is absolutely fascinating. It is located in Gorafe, an area of clay soils that, with the passage of time and erosion, has acquired an appearance reminiscent of western movies, which is why some of them have been filmed here. If you go by car, you can easily get to any of the viewpoints, where you can contemplate this fantastic place. And if you want more landscapes like this, go to the province of Almeria, where you can visit Tabernas, a desert that has also served as a backdrop in many films.

What to see near Granada: the wonders of the Costa Tropical

And there is nothing more perfect to complete a trip than a visit to Almuñecar and Motril, on the Tropical Coast. In these towns you can change the car for a boat to travel on the gentle waters. And if staying on the surface is not enough, you can also make a splash here by practicing water sports.
