Visiting Majorca: what you need to know

The Pearl of the Mediterranean is an extraordinarily multifaceted island. Here you will find everything from golden sandy beaches andturquoise bluewaters to monuments steeped in history, as well as natural enclaves surrounded by pine trees, olive trees, orchards and lots of peace and quiet. Feel the vibrant spirit of its capital city, visit the various museums with the best of contemporary art and taste its splendid food, deeply respectful of its own fresh produce. Travel to Majorca requires the maximum attention of all five senses.

Travel to Majorca: rent a car and go at your own pace

The largest of the Balearic Islands has an area of 3,640 km² and the distances from one end to the other can be long. Therefore, if you are travelling to Majorca, the best way to visit it at your own pace and with total freedom is with a vehicle rental. We recommend you to choose Palma as your 'headquarters’ and explore the island on short trips from there.

Palma de Mallorca

You can't travel to Majorca without spending one day exploring its capital, replete with an unparalleled historical heritage of Arab, Jewish and Roman influences. The cathedral stands right on the shore of its bay, a jewel of Gothic architecture. Stroll through the old town.

There you will find the museum Es Baluard, the magnificent courtyards of stately homes and the impressive Renaissance building of the Lonja. Be sure to visit the Almudaina Palace or the Bellver Castle, located on a hill with spectacular views.

Beaches and coves

There are more than 300 and to suit all tastes. Make a note of these idyllic places if you are traveling to Majorca. On the one hand, there are the wide sandy beaches of calm waters and easy access (Es Trenc, Muro or Sa Canova). On the other, you will find small coves, more rugged but of astonishing beauty (Caló des Moro, s'Almunia, Es Marmols, cala Blava or cala Figuera).

Sierra de Tramuntana: a must if you want to see Majorca

The backbone of the island, the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range covers some 1,000 km², and is dotted with stepped valleys, winding roads, cliffs, farming villages and dreamlike landscapes. A privileged place, with tiny beaches at its feet, it is perfect for hiking.

You really must travel to Majorca to discover this magical enclave, which has enchanted so many artists. As you can see, in Majorca there are not only beaches, there is much more.

The caves

The east coast of the island is riddled with caves. Some are immense, such as those of Drach, Hams or d'Artà (the latter tend to be less crowded), true underground cathedrals. Their lakes, stalactites and stalagmites make up an extraordinary natural scenery that you shouldn’t miss if you want to see all of Majorca.

Sóller

Sóller is a small town that has maintained its essence, oblivious to the passage of time. Its setting meant that this town lived with its back to Palma, more concentrated on trading with Marseilles. Its architecture combines modernism with French-influenced palaces, and is a 'must' when traveling to Majorca.

Pollença and Alcudia

They are two of the most beautiful destinations in Majorca, both in the north.

Alcudia is a city surrounded by imposing walls and bathed by two bays. It embraces about 30 km of coastline, with fantastic beaches and coves, some wilder than others. Pollença, on the other hand, is considered the cultural cradle of the island, a town with great personality that seduced Agatha Christie herself.

Cape Formentor

Protected by the north winds, it is the northernmost point of the island and one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean to watch the sunset. This indomitable tongue of land is considered the magical meeting point of all winds. Get close to the lighthouse and you will see some postcard scenery.

Cabrera

A trip to Majorca is inconceivable without an excursion to the island of Cabrera, which is small in size but enormous in biodiversityand seabed. A practically virgin land where time stands still.

Book in advance to visit Majorca

Although the avalanche of tourists is concentrated in July and August, Majorca receives visitors all year round. So the best thing to do is to book your car, hotel and tickets to the places you want to visit online and in advance.
