Is it possible for a single city to combine tradition, luxury, culture and, on top of that, the sea? Of course it is, and the proof is in the tour of Abu Dhabi outlined below.

Dubai is often the primary destination for visitors to the United Arab Emirates, but Abu Dhabi is also well worth a visit. In fact, the experience is more leisurely, more authentic and with a whole host of possibilities; and contrary to popular belief, there are usually no large crowds.

In this article we tell you all about the renowned museums you can visit, the souks full of enticing aromas and vivid colours, and even a promenade overlooking the Persian Gulf. Take note of this tour of Abu Dhabi.

Museums on Saadiyat Island

One of the most spectacular stops you can make on a tour of Abu Dhabi is Saadiyat Island, where the Louvre Abu Dhabi is located. It houses a collection that connects Eastern and Western civilisations, but it is also famous for its architecture. Its white dome appears to float above the sea and creates a play on the light that changes throughout the day.

Inside, the temporary and permanent exhibitions take you from antiquity to contemporary art with works from around the world. The visit usually lasts around two hours, but you can stay longer if you prefer or enjoy a drink in the café.

What's more, Saadiyat Island is expected to host other iconic museums, such as the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, in the coming years. If it was already an essential stop on your tour of Abu Dhabi, very soon this will be even more true.

Tour of the souks and Emirati traditions

A good tour of Abu Dhabi should always include a stop in the souks and their unique ambiance. Some have been modernised in recent years, but most of them still stick to the traditions that take you back in time in just a few seconds. One of the best known is the Souk Central Market, designed with both traditional and modern touches. You can buy handicrafts, Arab lamps, carpets, spices and tea.

In addition, we also recommend:

  • A visit to the Gold Souk if you are a fan of jewellery, because the windows are laden with rings, bracelets and necklaces worked in exquisite detail. Even if you're not planning on buying anything, this area is worth a stroll.
  • The Perfume Souk if you are looking for a more sensory experience. It's a whole new world that's nothing like anything you've experienced before, with bottles of oud, amber and custom blends. In addition, the sellers will explain each fragrance and its meaning in detail.

Your tour of Abu Dhabi continues along the Corniche

Looking for peace of mind on your tour of Abu Dhabi? If so, spend some time walking the Corniche. This five-mile long promenade allows you to walk, cycle or even drive down it by car.

You can start at the end near Al Khubeirah park and head towards the centre, stopping at the well-kept Corniche public beach or at one of the cafés with a terrace. If you are travelling with your family, there are children's playgrounds, cycle paths and green areas to relax in the shade.

In the evening, the promenade has a much more local atmosphere, whether going for a stroll or having a picnic.

Discover heritage and culture on your tour of Abu Dhabi

You shouldn't leave Abu Dhabi without learning about its history and spirituality. These are some of the essential stops:

  • Start at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the most beautiful temples in the Islamic world. It is made of white marble, decorated with crystals, columns and huge carpets. Admission is free, and you only need to follow the dress code to go inside.
  • Continue on to Heritage Village, a sort of open-air museum that recreates what life was like in the Emirates before the discovery of oil. There are adobe houses, pottery workshops, looms and stalls to taste typical local products.
  • The last stop on our list is Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest building in the city, now a museum. It is the best way to see how Abu Dhabi has evolved in less than a century, from a simple fishing settlement to the bustling modern metropolis it is today.

Already decided on your tour? Now all you have to do is rent a car with OK Mobility in Abu Dhabi, either at the airport or on the Corniche-Grandiose, and explore the second largest city in the United Arab Emirates at your own pace.
