Abu Dhabi: Places you can’t miss
Before we dive into the city’s main tourist attractions, let us tell you that the best way to get around Abu Dhabi with total freedom is to rent a car at the airport. The city is large and, although you can also get around by public transport, a car gives you more freedom.
That being said, let's get into the top things to see in Abu Dhabi. Remember that it is preferable to travel, whenever possible, between the months of November and April to avoid the high temperatures there in summer.
Sheikh Zayed Mosque
This is the most important mosque in the United Arab Emirates and also the largest. It owes its name to the first sheikh who presided over the country, who had this mosque built as a symbol of union and peace among the Islamic world.
The mosque’s most striking feature is the set of 82 white marble domes with golden details that give it an imposing and elegant appearance. And, if you want to see it at night, the lighting really does it justice. To visit it, it is mandatory to comply with the dress code.
To get the best picture, we recommend standing at the Oasis of Dignity fountain right in front of the mosque. This monument has a high symbolic value for the city, as it honors all those who have sacrificed their lives for the United Arab Emirates.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
When you think of the Louvre, you probably think of Paris. But did you know that Abu Dhabi has one too? Its architecture is not akin to that of its brother in Paris, but the interior does still house an immense collection of renowned artworks and sculptures.
The Corniche promenade
Walking along the 5-mile beach along the promenade in this area of downtown Abu Dhabi is another of the city’s great tourist attractions, especially at sunset. From here, you also have great views of the entire Persian Gulf.
Qasr Al Watan
The presidential palace is another must-see spot in Abu Dhabi, and it's also one of the newest, having only opened in 2019. The most outstanding feature is its interior decoration and architecture, especially in the great hall. We don't want to give you any spoilers, but it is truly mesmerizing.
Theme parks
If you spend several days in Abu Dhabi, you can take some time out to visit the various theme parks in the city. The most popular are Ferrari World, a park dedicated to the Italian car manufacturer; Yas Waterworld, a water park; and Warner Bros World, inspired by various characters from this production company.
Qasr Al Hosn
Architecture lovers will appreciate a visit to this monument, known as the White Fort. If you do go, you should know that this is the oldest stone building in the city, dating from the late 18th century. Initially, it was built to protect what was Abu Dhabi's only freshwater well, but it later became the emir's palace.
Etihad Towers
This set of 5 towers forms one of the most iconic images of Abu Dhabi, so it is no surprise that it is one of its most photographed locations. We recommend seeing them at night with their nighttime illuminations and going up to the viewpoint on the 74th floor to contemplate a panoramic view of the whole city.
As you now know, there is a lot to see in Abu Dhabi and this city has a lot to offer. If you're going to travel there, chances are it's a once-in-a-lifetime trip, so it's only logical that you'll want to make the most of it.
