The city of Hamburg is located in the north of Germany and has 1,857,000 inhabitants, according to data from 2020. It is the second most populous city in the country. Millions of tourists go there every year, as it is also widely known for its temperature and gastronomy. Although the winters are cold, its proximity to the sea means that Hamburg has a fairly pleasant temperature compared to other German cities.

This town is full of charms. Many of its monuments and buildings were seriously damaged during World War II and, although they were rebuilt, there are still many traces that remain. And if you are wondering what to see in Hamburg, here are some of the places you must visit, take note!

Cathedral of Saint Michael

The city of Hamburg is full of churches and cathedrals to visit. And all of them are full of history. However, one of the most popular to visit is Saint Michael. It stands in the center of the city and this is precisely one of the factors that makes it one of the landmarks to see in Hamburg.

It can be visited all day long, both inside and out. If you decide to explore its interior, you can climb up to the platform, 106 meters high, where you can see the entire historic center of the city.

Port of Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg is another of the city's main attractions. It is located at the mouth of the Elbe River and it is precisely because of its privileged location that it is called 'Germany's gateway to the world'.

It is the largest port in the country and one of the most important in the world. There are many places you can visit, such as the Fishmarkt -Fish Market-. Its name might confuse you, as you can buy anything you can imagine there, and also listen to live music.

You can visit the Hamburg Emigration Museum, the sailing ship Rickmer Rickmers, the cargo ship MV Cap San Diego and the more daring can walk on the 700-meter-long floating bridge.

Elbtunnel, one of Hamburg's must-see attractions

Elbtunnel, known in English as the Elbe Tunnel, connects the Port of Hamburg with the Steinwerder district. It is nearly one kilometer long, although what makes it special is that it wasbuilt 12 meters underwater.

It is one of Germany's national monuments, declared as such in 2003, being the first tunnel in Europe to cross a river. Although it is a spectacular place to visit in Hamburg at any time of the day, we recommend that you do it at night. This way you can enjoy the city from another perspective and see how it is lit up at night.

Speicherstadt and Hafen City

The Speicherstadt and Hafen City are two of the most beautiful neighborhoods to visit in Hamburg. They are home to some of the city's most iconic bridges and canals. They used to form an industrial area, since it was where goods were unloaded from the ships. What's more, until 2004 you could even find a customs office inside this famous neighborhood.

That industrial activity is now a thing of the past, although the city has been able to take advantage of its past to attract tourists. Today it has become an area to stroll through at any time of the day, and seeing the canals illuminated at night is especially beautiful.

Sankt Pauli

The well-known district of Sankt Pauli, also known as the Red Light District, takes center stage in terms of atmosphere and leisure. It is the area par excellence of bars and discotheques. It was here that the Beatles played at the beginning of their career, which is why there is a statue in their honor in the street.

This neighborhood is also well-known for its street of prostitutes, where only men are allowed to enter. At night, the neighborhood is filled with neon lights, and there are drag queens that offer guided tours of its streets.

Another essential stop in Hamburg is to try one of its restaurants. Despite what you might think, this German city is the birthplace of hamburgers. There are many worthwhile restaurants, but we recommend a stop at The Bird Hamburg.

If you want to travel around Hamburg at your own pace, make as many stops as you want and even visit some nearby cities, the best option is to rent a car in Hamburg with OK Mobility and let yourself be carried away by the charm of Germany.
