The most common dishes in Germany cooking

If you are traveling to Germany, you will be able to taste traditional German food. If you don't have much of an idea about the country’s food, you should make a note of all these recipes.

Eisbein

This name is used for German pork knuckle. This is a hearty dish full of flavor which requires the following ingredients.

  • 1 pork knuckle
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • Half a leek
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Half a stick of celery
  • 2 medium potatoes
  • Black peppercorns or ground black pepper
  • 125 ml. of beer
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt

Preparation:

As for the steps to make this typical German recipe, the first thing to do is to boil the knuckle in a large pot. In the meantime you will have to wash and peel the vegetables and add them to the pot, except for the potatoes. Add the spices and cook over medium heat for about 90 minutes. After this, add the whole peeled potatoes and when everything is well cooked, it is time to put it in the oven. Preheat it to 200º, put the ingredients in a baking dish and put it in the oven. After a few minutes, baste it with beer and leave it in the oven until golden brown.

Spätzle

This is the most popular pasta recipe in Germany. It is a simple recipe full of flavor that everyone likes, so you shouldn’t miss it if you go to this European country.

Ingredients:

  • 600 g wheat flour
  • 1 egg
  • Salt
  • Water
  • 1 press for Spätzle

Preparation:

Making homemade spatzle is easy as pie. To do this you will have to put the beaten egg in a bowl before adding the flour and salt and mixing everything together. Carefully add warm water while stirring the mixture until you get a more liquid mass that you will have to let stand for 20 minutes.

Place water to boil in a pot and when you see that it starts to boil, turn the heat to the minimum. After this, you will have to scrape the dough you have made over the spaetzle maker so that the dough falls into the pot. After this, it is time to cook the pasta. You can accompany this dish with a cheese sauce.

Roulade

Another delicious recipe typical of German cooking is roulade.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg Beef steak
  • 1/2 chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • Various cooked vegetables
  •  Lemon zest
  • Pepper to taste

Elaboration:

The first thing to do is to fry the onion and garlic until they are golden brown. Add the vegetables to taste, stir everything for a few minutes to combine the flavours, and add salt and pepper.

After this, spread the steaks out, add salt and pepper to taste, and place two spoonfuls of the vegetable mix in the center. Roll them up and put some toothpicks to hold them. Heat the roll in a frying pan with oil so that it browns well and when you see that it is ready, remove and let it rest for about 15 minutes.
