A drive through the Algarve is a perfect option to enjoy a short getaway. This country has much to see and discover and the south is one of its most attractive regions. In the Algarve, spectacular beaches, a warm climate during most of the year, natural parks where you can go hiking, and spectacular gastronomy await.

Beyond its rich landscape, this region of Portugal has many charming cities and towns that combine history, culture, and even nightlife. To make sure you don’t miss anything, take note of this five-day itinerary where you will discover the most significant spots in the Algarve.

Faro: a great starting point for a driving tour of the Algarve

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and is therefore the perfect place to start the journey. During your first day you can spend your time visiting the Cidade Velha, which is the old town. A real labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets will take you from the cathedral to the Arca da Vila medieval gate.

When you get tired of the city, if that is even possible, visit the Ria Formosa natural park. Buy a ticket for a boat ride on the estuary and enjoy the tranquility and the flora and fauna that surround you. And after a day of exploring, there is nothing like returning to the city center to enjoy its gastronomy.

Second day: Lagos

On the second day of the Algarve driving tour we recommend you head to Lagos. This coastal city has a long historical tradition and truly spectacular beaches.

One of its major tourist attractions is The Ponta da Piedade a cape where the cliffs have been eroded by the water and now have curious shapes. You can visit this area by land, walking the coastal trails, or join one of the many boat tours.

Of course, you can't miss beaches like Praia do Camilo or Meia Praia, even in winter you are sure to find good weather and you can enjoy some peace and quiet while sunbathing.

In the afternoon, head to the old town to explore its cobblestone streets. Santo António Church and Gil Eanes Square are not to be missed. If you need to recharge your batteries, this area is full of bars and restaurants.

Albufeira, destination for day 3

The third day of this Algarve driving tour is dedicated to one of the most lively coastal towns in the area. If you are in the mood for sun and beach, Praia dos Pescadores and Praia da Oura are two good choices for a refreshing swim.

In the historic center you can wander through its cobblestone streets and get close to one of its most significant monuments, the Torre do Relógio

If Albufeira is known for anything, it is for its nightlife, and we encourage you to check it out. In the area known as the "Strip" you will find a large number of bars, discos, and even live shows.

Tavira: destination for the fourth day of your Algarve driving tour

After an intense day and night in Albufeira, there can be nothing better than a day in Tavira to relax. Its Roman bridges crossing the Gilao River will wow you, but do not linger too long and head up to the castle, because from there you have great panoramic views.

For true relaxation, take a boat and head to Tavira Island. There, golden sand beaches and crystal clear waters await you. You can finish off the day with a cataplana, a typical dish of the region made with seafood.

Sagres and Cape St. Vincent

Sagres is a town in the southwestern region of the Algarve, where the main point of interest is the Fort. From this historic enclave you can enjoy spectacular views of the cliffs and the ocean.

From there you can head to Cape St. Vincent, which is the southwesternmost point in all of Europe. If you arrive as the sun is going down, you will enjoy a sunset you will never forget.

If before or after seeing the Cape you want to enjoy a little more beach, Praia do Beliche is one of the most recommended, and it is usually quiet.

You are now nearing the end of your trip, so there is nothing better than celebrating it with a good fish dinner. Afterwards, back to the hotel and get everything ready to return home.

A drive through the Algarve will allow you to discover spectacular places and charming villages. Don’t miss out! If you need a car to get you on your way, you know you can count on us.
