Want to know more about Popeye Village in Malta? If you are planning to spend a few days on the archipelago, this curious place cannot be missing from your trip.
Where is Popeye Village in Malta?
Malta has hundreds of beautiful locations. If this is your next destination, don't hesitate to hop in your car and visit some of the most beautiful towns and villages of this country. If you want to make your trip even more extraordinary, include a visit to Popeye Village.
It is located in Anchor Bay, a very beautiful and quiet region in the north of the archipelago, very close to the popular village of Mellieha. From Valletta, the capital, you can be there in about 45 minutes by car. What's more, upon arrival you can leave your vehicle in an ample car park, free of charge.
Popeye Village's location in this area is no coincidence. Anchor Bay was chosen as the location for the set because it is a protected cove, surrounded by cliffs and nature. Perfect to escape from the hustle and bustle of urban areas.
What is Popeye Village?
It is the set built in 1979 for the filming of the musical "Popeye". If you haven't seen the film, an interesting fact is that Robin Williams had his first starring role in it.
Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney needed a location that evoked a 19th-century fishing village, and Malta was the perfect setting. Over seven months, just over 150 workers built the village with lumber brought directly from Canada.
They erected over 20 structures and, at the end of filming, they were not dismantled. Today, the entire village is still standing and has become an important tourist attraction.
The best of Popeye Village in Malta
Sweethaven, which is the real name of Popeye's village, now operates as a theme park. In fact, it is one of Malta's main tourist attractions. It comes highly recommended whether you are travelling with your family, as a couple or alone, because you are sure to be surprised.
What was the original film set has been expanded over time and is now an open-air museum. Strolling through its streets you can see artisans making blown glass, puppet shows and much more. You can also watch a documentary about the making of the film and participate in activities such as face painting, wine tasting, etc. You can even play mini-golf!
One of the key points of interest is Popeye's house. If you haven't seen the movie (it was not a huge commercial success), but you have seen the cartoons, you will feel like you are in one of the episodes. What's more, during your walk through the village you are sure to meet different characters that you will quickly recognise.
Aquatic activities in Anchor Bay
If you visit Popeye Village in Malta during the summer season, you can enjoy the aquatic activities. The bay has crystal-clear turquoise waters that are perfect for scuba diving and visiting places like the Scorpion Cave.
If you prefer something a little quieter, you can sunbathe on the Balinese beds or take a refreshing dip. In the village itself you will find changing rooms where you can comfortably get changed. If you are looking for something a little more fun, in the centre of the cove there are some inflatables and trampolines that can be used by both children and adults.
Another option is to take one of the boats that travel around Anchor Bay. If you like photography, doing this will allow you to return home with some spectacular snapshots.
Route through the best beaches in Malta
You can spend all day in Popeye Village because there is a lot to see and do. However, if your stay in Malta is short and you want to make the most of it, from there you can also take a short tour of some of the best beaches in the country.
- Golden Bay: A sandy beach, which is a rarity in Malta, where beaches are typically pebble beaches. This makes it a very popular spot and it is always full of Maltese and tourists.
- Ghajn Tuffieha Bay: Less crowded than the previous one, but access on foot is somewhat complicated and there are no additional services. However, it is worth the effort to see the views from the tower of the same name.
- Gnejna Bay: A beach of sand and rocks from which you can go to Ta'Lippija Tower and take in the incredible views.
