The city of Tivat, in Montenegro, is a privileged location to unwind in summer. In the middle of the bay of Kotor, Tivat is a perfect enclave for lovers of coastal tourism seeking tranquility and to escape the most crowded areas. In this article, we explain the best plans in Tivat to enjoy your holiday.

Plans in Tivat not to be missed

One of Tivat's main attractions is its proximity to the airport, which makes it one of the most internationally connected cities in Montenegro. Therefore, if you are travelling to Tivat you should know that you can rent a car at the airport without a hitch to get around freely.

Another of the best qualities of this Montenegrin city is that, due to its Mediterranean climate, it is a perfect place to visit at any time of the year. If you are visiting Tivat in summer, you will enjoy the most atmospheric time of the year. But, if you are looking for an off-peak getaway, Tivat offers a fairly mild climate for most of the year.

That said, let's show you some of the best plans to discover Tivat.

Visit the Buca Summer House and the Naval Museum

If you go to Tivat, one of the best plans is to visit the Buca family's summer house, which dates back to medieval times, around the 15th century. This summer residence, with its Renaissance style, has become one of the icons of the city.

Inside there are usually exhibitions linked to local customs and traditions, and cultural activities are held there in summer.

On the other hand, Tivat is a significant port city in Montenegro and the Naval Museum is a celebration of this fact. You'll even get to see a very interesting submarine from the Yugoslavian period.

Discover the islands of Prevlaka and Gospa od Milosti

This small island houses the remains of the Monastery of St. Michael the Archangel, to whom the island was originally dedicated. The monastery dates back to the 13th century, but was destroyed in the 15th century due to rumours that it was a hotbed of disease that had to be eradicated.

Another of the top recommendations in Tivat is to go to the island of Gospa od Milosti, a small islet that faces the island of Sveti Marko, where you can discover an impressive and unexpected monastery. The monastery is dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy and dates back to the 15th century. For three centuries it was a place of retreat for Franciscan monks.

Visit the monastery of the rocks

In Tivat it is known by the Montenegrin name, Gospa od Škrpjela, and is a small island off the coast of Perast. It owes its name to the fact that it is not a natural island, it was actually formed from rocks and the remains of ships that have accumulated over time. In fact, a tradition is celebrated every July: the throwing of stones into the sea to commemorate the founding of the island.

However, what really stands out is a large 17th-century church in Byzantine style, with two adorning blue domes. In the museum, it is also possible to see various objects dating back to 3,500 BC.

Bay of Kotor Cruise

Spending the day on a boat cruising around the bay of Kotor is one of the best ways to enjoy the natural charm that this part of Montenegro has to offer. In addition, the trip can be complemented with a visit to the city of Kotor, declared a World Heritage Site.

Dinner in Porto Montenegro

The Montenegro marina is known by many as the most luxurious port in the Balkans, where the most prominent personalities gather, especially at night. Therefore, if you want to enjoy a little more luxury, this area is the perfect place to do so.

Visit Herceg Novi

If you rent a car in Tivat, another great option is to drive along the coastal road for an hour until you reach Herceg Novi, one of the most charming towns in Montenegro, bordering Croatia. Here, you can't miss the Clock Tower, dating back to 1667, the church of St. Michael the Archangel and Forte Mare, a 14th-century fortress that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire bay.

As you can see, Tivat is full of things to do during the summer.
