Without further ado, here are the best places to visit near Belgrade.

Smederevo

Smederevo, about 45 kilometers southeast of Belgrade, is known for its impressive fortress of the same name. It was built in the 15th century, so it is emblematically medieval in style. It is also one of the largest fortified complexes in Europe, with high walls and towers that offer beautiful views of the area, as well as a deeper understanding of the history of this country.

It is quite well preserved, despite having been bombed in World War II. Today it has been declared immovable cultural heritage of exceptional importance and in 2010 it was nominated as a potential UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Oplenac

Located about 80 kilometers south of Belgrade, Oplenac is known for the beauty of its church of St. George, which crowns the eponymous hill. This Serbian royal church is a historical and artistic monument, decorated with impressive mosaics that recount the country’s history. And we say royal because it is not only a church, but also the mausoleum of the Karađorđević royal family. The house and gardens are just a sample of their rich heritage.

Viminacium

Moesia was a Roman province south of the Danube, which in 86 A.D. was attacked by the Dacians under the command of their king, Duras. Emperor Domitian had to go there to take action, and decided to divide the region in two to avoid future conflict. These two parts are Moesia Inferior, which is northern Bulgaria up to the south bank of the Danube, and Moesia Superior, which covers central Serbia, Kosovo and part of Macedonia.

Viminacium was one of the main cities of Moesia Superior, about 145 kilometers from Belgrade. Now, it is an archaeological site that includes temples, squares, amphitheaters, palaces, baths, circuses and streets. More than 40 thousand objects, many of them of gold and silver, and more than 15 thousand graves. Astonishing figures representing only a small percentage of what is still buried.

Avala

Located about 16 kilometers south of Belgrade is the Avala Mountain, where the iconic Avala Tower awaits. If you like losing yourself in nature, you can walk the trail to the top. From the top, you will have panoramic views of the entire region. Rebuilt after its destruction in 1999, the Avala Tower has become a symbol of resilience, but also a refuge in nature close to the city.

Vršac

If you head north, in just a couple of hours you will reach this wonderful place that combines history with architecture and natural beauty. In its old town, you can appreciate the multicultural heritage of the region, with Turkish and Austro-Hungarian influences in its architecture. The most popular landmark there is Vršac Castle, with its emblematic bell tower and panoramic views. A short distance away you have the Fruska Gora National Park in Beočin, with wooded hills in which there are ancient monasteries, villages, still lakes and vineyards.
