The capital of Bavaria, one of the top five cities in the world in terms of quality of life, is cosmopolitan and relaxed, comfortable and dynamic, traditional and avant-garde, where art, architecture, history and gastronomy merge into a unique and fascinating cocktail. Come with us and discover Munich by car: both this city of contrasts and the various excursions we suggest will make your trip an unforgettable experience.

Tips before traveling to Munich by car

Once you have landed, you can take a short tour of the airport, the only one in Europe with a 5-star rating. Then rent your vehicle at Munich airport (safe, modern and well equipped) and go to the hotel you have booked (we recommend staying in the outskirts: theprices are much cheaper than in the center and the rooms are very spacious and fully equipped). The drive from there to the center of Munich takes less than ten minutes.

What to see in Munich

Historical center

Park your vehicle and enter the lively old town of Munich, which is full of life, with its extraordinary heritage and immense cultural legacy.

Everything begins and ends in one of the most beautiful squares in Germany, Marienplatz the nerve center of the city.

Around it are the imposing cathedral of the Virgin (Frauenkirche) and its twin domes, the church of St. Peter (Peterskirche), the oldest in the city, the old and the new town hall, in a beautiful neo-Gothic style and with its impressive carillon of automatons.

If you need to recharge your batteries, a stop at the huge, long-established brewery Hofbräuhaus is almost imperative: soak up the festive atmosphere and share a table, a jug of beer and a pretzel with locals and travelers from all over the world. A magnificent traditional German experience with live folk music in the world’s capital of this liquid gold.

Outdoors

On your route through Munich by car you can't miss the Viktualienmarkt, a street market in the heart of the old town where the most refined delicacies are sold alongside vegetables, herbs, wine, bread, cheese and sausages of a thousand kinds: a feast for the senses. Another outdoor delight is the Englischer Garten, an extraordinary English-style park, the great lung of Munich, larger even than London's Hyde Park or New York's Central Park.

A stream runs through it (Eisbach), where you watch surfers ride on artificial waves in a most curious spectacle. We also recommend a visit to Nymphenburg Palace, the imposing summer residence of the Bavarian kings surrounded by immense gardens and picturesque pavilions.

Escapes from Munich to surrounding areas

Fantasy

Starting from this southern city, there are a wide range of routes and getaways that you can not miss, always with the Alps as eternal horizon. Just a stone's throw from Munich by car is Neuschwanstein, the fabulous castle - pure fantasy - that inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty.

This building, with a romantic aura and erected on a rock, is one of the castles built by Ludwig II of Bavaria, also known as the Mad King due to his dreamy and somewhat eccentric character. The fairy tale continues in the neighboring village of Füssen, an enchanting medieval ensemble.

Crossing borders: more magic

Salzburg (less than two hours from Munich by car) is definitely one of the must-see excursions.

Sheltered by the Austrian Alps, it is a city - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - dotted with medieval abbeys and fortresses, Renaissance and Baroque palaces set among cobblestone streets opening onto spacious squares. The birthplace of the great Mozart, absolutely captivating, magical, harmonious, elegant and powerful, it is a destination that does not disappoint.

Historical memory: Dachau

This is a very different visit from the others. Just 20 minutes from Munich by car is the concentration camp of Dachau, the first concentration camp set up by the Nazi regime, in which almost 40,000 prisoners died. It is an opportunity to remind ourselves of a terribly tragic and dark episode in contemporary European history and to understand its dimension, as well as to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. We recommend that you take a tour with a guide.
