After Rome, Milan is the second most populated Italian municipality. This cosmopolitan city continues to gain popularity and welcomes more tourists and visitors every year. Not only for the beauty of its Duomo or the elegance of its boutiques, but also for the many routes that originate here and allow you to discover the charms of the Italian region of Lombardy.

In this article, we tell you how to plan the best Milan road trip getaway to complement your trip to Northern Italy. If you like mountain scenery, a trip to Milan and renting a car is a unique experience. Let's see where this trip takes us!

Milan road trip getaway: routes not to be missed

One of Milan's great attractions is that, despite being a highly developed and urban city, the most natural environments are within walking distance.

However, it is advisable to rent a car in Milan to be able to get around with total freedom, depending on your preferences. Here are some routes that will help you to see Italy from a different perspective.

Lake Maggiore and Lake Como

This part of Italy is known as the region of the lakes and it is easy to see why. At the foot of the Alps stretches a succession of lakes, each one more impressive than the last and surrounded by villages of incredible beauty. We suggest a visit to two of them: Lake Maggiore and Lake Como.

Near Lake Maggiore sits the hidden but beautiful hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, a hermitage on a steep cliff that was built as a sanctuary. And, in the surroundings of Lake Como, there are some charming villages that are well worth a visit.

Apart from Como itself, you can see the hanging houses of Brienno, the Villa del Balbianello, the colourful streets of Menaggio, enjoy the postcard views of Varenna from the road or go to the Parco Valentino viewpoint to admire the lake itself.

Bergamo

The second stop to make on your Milan road trip is Bergamo. Once there, you can travel from the lower to the upper part of the city via its funicular.

Essential tourist and cultural attractions include the Piazza Vecchia, the Palazzo del Podestà, the Piazza del Duomo, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where the Colleoni Chapel stands out, the city walls or the San Vigilio castle.

Trento and Lake Garda

Very close to Bergamo, and heading deeper into the Alps, we find Trento, a city known worldwide for being where the Council of Trent was signed. A stroll through its streets offers visitors an idea of the historical importance of this city, thanks to the numerous historic buildings in its small streets.

In addition, to reach Trento, you have to drive to Lake Garda, another of the most famous lakes of this region and the largest in Italy. Here, you cannot miss the Castello Scaligero, the peninsula of San Vigilio or Limone sul Garda, a village completely hidden among water and rocks.

And, if you like hiking and mountain scenery, we recommend going north of Trento to see the Dolomites, the most famous mountains of the Alps. Here, in addition, near Trento, you will find one of the most recognisable mountain passes as the road has about 80 winding curves.

Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet

A couple of hours from Milan by car is Verona, the city that Shakespeare chose as the setting for Romeo and Juliet. Therefore, if you visit this city, you will breathe the romantic essence wherever you go.

Here you can visit the Arena di Verona, one of the best preserved amphitheatres in the world; Piazza Bra, the heart of the city; or Piazza delle Erbe, the square which houses the market. And, of course, Juliet's House, which is the most visited spot by tourists.

How to enjoy the best Milan road trip getaway

If you visit Milan and have the opportunity to stay a few more days in Lombardy, renting a car is the best way to discover all the charms of northern Italy.

From the beauty of the alpine landscapes and hidden lakeside villages, to the history and culture oozing from the cities of northern Italy, it's all worth your time.
