Discovering Menorca by motorcycle is an unforgettable experience, as you can access corners of the island that are not as easy to reach by car.
Sunrise at Favàritx lighthouse and unspoiled coves
Menorca has seven lighthouses that delight all who pass through here. So there's nothing better than starting your adventure by watching the sunrise from one of them.
Set your alarm clock, get on your motorcycle and head for the Favàritx lighthouse in the north of the island. The landscape that awaits you there is almost lunar, and the cliffs are truly impressive. Undoubtedly, it is one of the best spots to see the sunrise.
From there, a trail leads you to two virgin beaches with white sand and crystal-clear waters: Cala Tortuga and Cala Presili. They are not directly accessible by motorcycle, but you can park very close and you will only have to walk for a few minutes to reach these stunning natural environments.
Inland towns and villages
After a relaxing time on the beach you can continue your route around Menorca by motorcycle towards the interior of the island. Along the way you will find many interesting towns to stop in, but two are especially recommended: Es Mercadal and Ferreries.
Es Mercadal is situated on the slopes of Monte Toro in the centre of the island. There you can observe the traditional Menorcan architecture in all its splendour. It is also a good place to enjoy the typical gastronomy of the region. If you arrive at elevenses, take the opportunity to order a coca bamba to go with your coffee.
Ferreries is one of Menorca's more industrial areas, since it is where most of the industries dedicated to footwear are located. But it is much more than that, as it is surrounded by nature. In fact, from here you can reach the Algendar ravine or Cala Mitjana with relative ease.
Make the most of the fact that you are in this area and climb up to the Castell de Santa Águeda. From this ancient Arab fortress (now in ruins) you have spectacular views of the inland area of Menorca. In addition, the road that leads there is narrow and has lots of gentle curves, which makes it perfect for a ride on a motorcycle.
Menorca by motorcycle: crowning the highest peak
Getting to Monte Toro from Es Mercadal is very easy. The PM-710 road will take you there directly. At the end of the road you will find the highest peak of Menorca, where you will have a unique panoramic view. On a clear day, you might even be able to see Mallorca.
In addition to appreciating the views, you can also visit the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Toro or take the opportunity to eat there and try some traditional Mediterranean food.
Secret coves in the south
The good thing about having a motorcycle is that you can easily get away from the most crowded tourist areas and explore hidden coves and beaches. While the vast majority will stay in Macarella or Turqueta, you can take advantage of the versatility of your vehicle to reach Cala Escorxada or Cala Fustam.
You cannot reach them with your vehicle, but you can park closer than a car can. Although you will have to walk, it is worth the effort, because when you get there you will find a practically virgin landscape, with incredibly clear waters.
The 'cathedral' of Menorca
Very close to Es Migjorn Gran you will find a detour that takes you to the Cova des Coloms. This huge natural cave is known as 'the cathedral' because its ceiling is so high that it almost looks like you are in a religious building.
Moving around the cave is not complicated, but it is important that you carry a flashlight and appropriate footwear to avoid hurting yourself. As a bonus tip, try to remain silent to maintain the almost mystical atmosphere of this natural enclave.
Tips to enjoy Menorca by motorcycle
As we have just seen, there is much to see and discover on this island. However, if you want to get the most out of the experience, take note of these tips:
- Spring and autumn are the best times to go on a route of this type, because the weather is good and you avoid the summer traffic.
- Use a light offroad bike or powerful scooter to travel safely on the island's narrow roads.
- Carry comfortable walking shoes in your luggage.
Two days are more than enough to explore the island by scooter and discover hidden spots. If this sounds like your kind of plan, rent your scooter in Menorca with OK Mobility and enjoy a truly unique holiday.
