A trip from Lisbon to the Algarve is one of the most complete routes in Portugal. Besides enjoying the Atlantic coast, you can visit cities with history and spectacular nature. Here are the top stops for your route.
Southern Portugal: diversity, landscape and character
The south of Portugal is known for its beaches, but it has many attractions that are worth visiting on a getaway. The Alentejo region, for example, has open plains, white villages and a deep-rooted agricultural tradition. To travel through them, you can take the back roads and drive without haste, while crossing olive groves and vineyards. It is a striking contrast to the chaos of the city of Lisbon.
As you head towards the Algarve, the landscape changes. There are cliffs, little-known coves and a more rugged coastline, bathed by the Atlantic. But even here there are notable differences; the western Algarve is wilder and less urbanised, while the eastern Algarve has quiet towns with a seafaring tradition. As such, the route is varied and entertaining from start to finish.
But, as is often the case with less touristy regions, public transportation always limits the possibilities. That being said, you always have the option of opting for a rental car. At OK Mobility we offer excellent conditions. You can even pick it up at Lisbon upon arrival, and return it in Faro as the final stop on your trip. We want you to have total freedom to plan your route from Lisbon to the Algarve as you wish.
Road trip from Lisbon to the Algarve: best stops
There are many options, but these are our favourite stops on the route from Lisbon to the Algarve.
Lisbon
Lisbon is the starting point and should be enjoyed before embarking on the trip. You can ride the trams up the slopes to stroll through neighbourhoods like Alfama, which is the oldest, with narrow streets and constant views of the Tagus. O Bairro Alto, which is transformed when night falls. And if you have time, go to Belém to see the city's historical relationship with the sea.
Setúbal
Setúbal is closely linked to the sea, with an active port and a gastronomy centred around fish. In the surroundings is the Arrábida Natural Park, and the road that crosses this area is one of the most beautiful of the route, with gentle curves and constant views of the ocean. Take the opportunity to stop at a viewpoint or go down to the beach.
Comporta
In Comporta, the monuments of Lisbon feel very far away. Here the tranquility of nature reigns supreme. Not commonly seen in this part of Europe, rice paddies adorn the landscape. As for the beaches, they go on for miles without large constructions. It is a good place to stop and take a walk or have a drink in one of the local bars.
Évora
The most historic stop from Lisbon to the Algarve is Évora. The centre is well preserved and has Roman remains, such as a temple, and medieval walls, which alternate with newer buildings. In addition to walking through its quiet streets, entering the cathedral or sitting in a square, it is a good place to try Alentejo's cuisine.
Vila Nova de Milfontes
In Vila Nova de Milfontes you will return to the ocean, but the sea convenes with the river. The beaches are quiet and less crowded and it is also an interesting spot to stop to eat or rest. The atmosphere is relaxed and with plenty of terraces. This area is part of the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park, so the environment is quite well cared for.
Sagres
In Sagres you will find one of the route’s most open landscapes, with impressive cliffs. Forget about touring cities, here it's all about stopping at points like Cape Saint Vincent and enjoying what the area has to offer. And if you go at sunset, you will also get an excellent photo as a souvenir.
Faro
Faro is a very quiet end of the route, as it preserves its local character. The old town is walled and small, but pleasant. And because of its proximity to the Ria Formosa, the landscape is quite peculiar, with marshes and canals that contrast with the cliffs to the west. Round off the trip with a relaxed dinner.
You only need a few days to complete a road trip from Lisbon to the Algarve. But if you want to make the most of every one of them, rent your car at Lisbon Airport with OK Mobility and enjoy the freedom to explore the Portuguese coast at your own pace, making as many stops as you like along the way.
