If you have chosen this German city located in the center of the country, along the Main River for a getaway, today we tell you what to see in Frankfurt in three days. You will have plenty of time to get to know it in depth and even explore the surrounding area.
What to see in Frankfurt?
Frankfurt is a German city known for being the headquarters of the European Central Bank and an important financial center. It is also the birthplace and residence of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Although today it can boast of its monuments and the permeating atmosphere, it had to be almost entirely rebuilt after the bombings of World War II.
Since its dimensions are not excessively large, in one day you will be able to visit all the most outstanding places. But as in any trip, it all depends on what activities you are interested in, since in addition to visiting architectural monuments, you can also take time to enjoy the local gastronomy, such as the famous sausage, or visit the most important museums.
And since you have plenty of time, at OK Rent A Car we recommend that you opt for a rental car with which you can tour the country and thus be able to visit other nearby cities and even get closer to areas that allow you to explore nature. In any case, here are some recommendations to include in your visit for you to check out!
Historic center
The historic center is one of the main attractions to see in Frankfurt, and in the center of this is the main square, Römerberg. Its importance lies not only in the number of houses from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with beautiful facades full of color, but here also stand some of the most outstanding buildings of the old part.
These are the Town Hall, known as Romer and inside which the Holy Roman Emperors were crowned; the Fountain of Justice, next to which there is a plaque commemorating the burning of books during the Nazi regime, or the church of St. Nicholas, in Gothic style and with beautiful stained-glass windows.
Financial center
The opposite side of the old town is the financial district, which, because of the height of its buildings, has come to be compared to Manhattan. The most important skyscrapers are the Commerzbank Tower, which is 259 meters high, the MesseTurm, 257 meters, and the cylindrical tower called Main Tower, 240 meters high and with a viewpoint from where the best panoramic views of the city can be seen.
Also in this area is the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, a neoclassical building that contrasts with the modernity of the previous ones. In the square where it is located, there are sculptures in the shape of bears and much more, which were placed in 1985 to celebrate its 400 years of activity.
Goethe's house
Although it was almost entirely destroyed by bombing, when the war ended it was rebuilt and is faithful to the original. In addition, furniture, photographs, paintings and objects of the artist are preserved.
Sachsenhausen Quarter
From the historic center you can reach this neighborhood by following the pedestrian Iron Bridge, which is made of steel and has a neo-Gothic style. It was also bombed and during restoration an elevator was included.
Zeil Street
Zeil Street is the commercial street par excellence, but its fame is not limited to within the city, but extends throughout the country. Therefore, it is another of the places to see in Frankfurt. The western part is pedestrianized and is located between two large squares, Hauptwache and Konstablerwache.
Frankfurt Museums
Another of the places to see in Frankfurt are its museums. The Museum of History is the best known, since through sculptures, paintings and photographs it makes a tour of what the city was until it became what it is today. Next to it, it is also worth a visit to the Museum of Modern Art or MMK with works dating from 1960 to the present day.
Nature in the surroundings
In addition to other nearby cities such as Stuttgart or Nuremberg, you can also bring out your explorer soul and visit the Upper Rhine Valley, which is a World HeritageSite and where castles such as Marksburg, romantic towns such as Kaub or the rocks in Loreley await you.
