Five must-sees in Zagreb

Ban Josip Jelačić Square

Ban Josip Jelačić Square is one of the must-see sights of Zagreb. It has been renamed several times, but currently owes its name to Josip Jelačić, who was governor of Croatia between 1848 and 1859. In the center of the square there is a statue in his honor although, interestingly, it was removed for several years as it was considered a nationalist symbol. In 1990 it was restored by popular demand.

Currently, it is the heart of the lower part of the city. Most of the streetcars pass through here, making it fully accessible to tourists. Around it you will find numerous buildings dating from the nineteenth century, as well as the Zagreb 360 viewpoint from which you will have the best views of the city.

Zagreb Cathedral

Ulica Augusta Street, which leads from the previous square, leads to the Zagreb Cathedral. However, you will first pass through a traditional market of local products that is sure to draw you in.

The origins of the cathedral date back to 1050. It stands out especially for its Gothic style and for all the architectural details, both on the facade and inside. It also stands out in the Zagreb skyline as the tallest building in the city.

Dolac Market

This is precisely the market of local products that you will find between Ban Josip Jelačić Square and the Zagreb Cathedral. Dolac market is one of those that becomes essential in any cityifyou want to immerse yourself fully in their customs and gastronomy.

You will have no problem finding it, as all the stalls are covered by large red umbrellas. It is very common to see Croatian citizens buying all kinds of fresh produce, but pastries and flowers are also common purchases.

St. Mark's Square, one of the historical places to see in Zagreb

In the heart of the old town is another of the places to see in Zagreb. St. Mark's Square is located in the old part of the city, also known as Gradec - Upper Town. It is one of the most attractive spots, with the church on one side and various government monuments on the other.

The church dates back to the 13th century and also has a very characteristic Gothic design. One of its distinguishing features is the red, blue and white roof with the coat of arms of Zagreb and the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Triune of Croatia.

In the same square you can visit some historical buildings of the city of Zagreb. Highlights include the Banski dvori Palace -the seat of the Croatian Government-, the Sabor Palace -the seat of the Parliament and the Constitutional Court- and the Old Town Hall.

Tkalčićeva Street

In every city there are popular streets that are lined with stores and bars to stop in. Zagreb is no different and that is exactly what Tkalčićeva Street has to offer. It is named after a famous historian and priest. Interestingly, for much of the twentieth century it was known as the street of brothels.

It is very easy to reach it from Ban Josip Jelačić Square, as everyone will be heading that way. This famous street is located in the upper part of the city and is well known for its nightlife. If you are a fan of beer, you can drink the best in the city in any of its bars. We put special emphasis on Pivnica Mali Medo, a perfect spot to enjoy with your friends or meet new people.

Of course, you can also taste typical dishes of the local gastronomy, buy any souvenir in its souvenir stores or simply enjoy its buildings. On this street is the statue of Marija Jurić Zagorka, a well-known Croatian journalist, writer and feminist.
