If you are traveling to Alicante for a few days, the variety of activities on offer is immense. Whether you prefer to explore different beaches along the coast of Alicante or if you are more a fan of inland tourism, there are options for all tastes.

The best way to explore the province with total freedom is to rent a car in Alicante. From there, you can travel anywhere you like, although here we have curated a selection of 5 charming towns and villages in Alicante that are less than an hour from the capital. Want to know what they are? Keep reading!

1. Calpe

One of the most famous towns in Alicante is Calpe, and no wonder. About 45 minutes from Alicante, Calpe has become world famous thanks to the Peñón de Ifach, which was declared a natural park in 1987. Climbing this huge rock early in the morning is one of the most recommended activities here, as it offers the best views.

In addition to the rock, Calpe has a number of tourist attractions that make a visit more than worth your while. For example, the Salinas de Calpe, located in the center of the city, where you can see flamingos.

Los Baños de la Reina is the name given to the best known archaeological site in Calpe. This site consists of a palace and Roman villa, as well as some artificial pools that were created as a fish farm at that time.

2. Altea

Altea is another of the most visited towns in Alicante. Strolling through its historic center and cobblestone streets is the best way to see the influence Muslim culture has had on this town.

Altea also allows you to enjoy over 6 kilometers of beaches, and even mountains. In fact, the municipality of Altea lies next to the Sierra de Bèrnia, where there are several interesting routes you can take.

And, if you like to snorkel, you can head to Olla Island to do just that.

3. El Castell de Guadalest

This village holds the title of one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Found a short hop from the coast and with barely 300 inhabitants, it has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site since 1974.

Exploring the old town is a way to discover the traditional architecture of the area, and due to its small size, this does not take long. A visit to Casa Orduña comes highly recommended, as this 17th-century noble villa gives a very clear idea of what life was like here in the past.

Although, undoubtedly, what most people come to Guadalest for are the castles: San José caste and Alcozaiba castle.

4. Jávea

Jávea has been getting more popular as a tourist destination thanks to the beauty of its coastline and its great combination of coves and cliffs. However, if you are looking for sandy beaches, in Jávea you will only find Arenal beach. The rest of the beaches are rocky.

In addition to enjoying the coast, the historic center of Jávea itself is a journey back in time to medieval times where you can contemplate the architecture of the time.

It has a number of maze-like cobblestone streets and imposing buildings and mansions. A curious place to visit is the church of San Bartolomé, a fortified church with a unique aesthetic.

5. Biar

The last town on our list is Biar, further inland. The most attractive thing about Biar is its great 12th-century Muslim castle, where it is possible to enjoy incredible views of the town.

Another interesting site in Biar is the Ogival Aqueduct, which dates back to the late 15th century and is over 220 feet long. Your day can be rounded off with a visit to the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Gracia and, in the center, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

These are just 5 of the many towns in Alicante that are worth visiting. And, if you don't have time to see them all in one trip, you can always rent a car in Alicante with OK Mobility again to continue your tour of the municipalities of Alicante at any time of the year. You won't regret it!
