The Italian island of Sardinia, located in the Mediterranean Sea, is a popular year-round destination. Besides having a natural charm that attracts thousands of tourists, it stands out for its cultural richness and dreamy beaches. If you are looking for the destination for your next getaway, we recommend you explore Sardinia by car from Olbia! This coastal town is located in the northeast of the island and is a fantastic starting point.

The Mediterranean has some breathtaking locations and Sardinia is one of them. Although you probably think of the emerald sea and white sandy beaches, this is an island of contrasts. You will find a breathtaking mountainous heartland, where you can delve into the wonders of nature and explore ancient traditions. Below, we detail a route through Sardinia with must-see stops at the most impressive places on the island.

Olbia, the gateway to Sardinia

Olbia is a good place to start a route through Sardinia by car. For years, this coastal city has become the gateway for many tourists, especially those coming from Italy. Besides having a strategic location, it perfectly combines history, culture and beauty.

In Olbia we suggest you visit the Basilica of San Simplicio, an ancient place of worship dating back to the 11th century, and stroll through the historic center. Among its cobblestone streets and unique little shops you will find local restaurants where you can enjoy a good Sardinian meal.

Costa Smeralda, a must-see in Sardinia

After leaving Olbia, we suggest you continue your route along the stunning Costa Smeralda. It is well known for its beaches with crystal clear waters and white sand where you can rest before continuing your trip. One of the best-known places in the area is Porto Cervo, a luxurious resort with exclusive stores, gourmet restaurants and breathtaking views of the marina.

If you prefer a quieter plan, you will love the Capriccioli beach. It is located on the cape of the Costa Smeralda and is a great window to the Mediterranean. It is a beach with fine white sand, transparent waters and granite rocks. Although it is usually quite crowded, you can't leave Sardinia without taking a swim.

La Maddalena Archipelago, a natural paradise

The La Maddalena Archipelago is a National Park that is made up of several islands and can boast some of the most stunning beaches in Sardinia. It includes La Maddalena, Caprera, Spargi, Santo Stefano, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli, as well as small rocky islets.

The islands of La Maddalena and Caprera are the only ones that can be reached by car; the rest are only accessible by boat. In La Maddalena we suggest a tour of its picturesque streets, its museums and, of course, the breathtaking views offered by the viewpoint of Punta Tegge. If you also want to visit Caprera, the Casa Museo Garibaldi is a must-see. We also recommend a visit to Cala Cotticcio, also known as the Prince's Beach.

Alghero, historical and cultural charm

The next stop on the Sardinia route is Algero, a town with a strong Catalan influence and a fascinating history. We recommend exploring the old town and immersing yourself in its history through its medieval walls and narrow cobblestone streets.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria is an essential stop, as it stands out for its Gothic architecture and impressive glass windows. If you prefer something closer to the coast, in Alghero there are very famous sea caves. It is possible to explore its natural wonders, such as the Neptune Caves, with a boat excursion.

Bosa, a city with medieval charm

The city of Bosa is located on the western coast of Sardinia. One of its main attractions is its medieval old town, with narrow streets and colorful houses in pastel tones. You cannot leave Bosa without visiting the Malaspina Castle, a medieval fortress with panoramic views of the entire city.

You can also stroll along the Temo river, the only navigable river in Sardinia, visit a local winery and taste the traditional wines of the city. For example, Malvasia is well known for having a sweet and aromatic flavor.

Cagliari, the jewel of the south and the last stop on the Sardinian route

The last stop on the route through Sardinia is Cagliari, the capital and one of the most famous spots. This city is a faithful representation of the island as a whole, as it combines history, culture and beaches. First, we recommend exploring the old town, known as the Castello, visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria and the ancient walls surrounding the city.

After strolling along Cagliari's promenade, you can visit the Roman Amphitheater and, of course, its beaches. The capital of Sardinia has some of the most beautiful beaches of the whole island, such as Potto beach. Relax, take your last swim of the trip and enjoy its beauty.
