Both countries have cities that have adapted to the European style. However, the real charm of this part of the Balkans lies in its natural landscapes and rural areas. Don't miss this route through Albania and North Macedonia.

Why travel to Albania and North Macedonia?

In these two countries, and from the very moment you cross the border, you will notice that their natural essence remains untouched. Here there is an abundance of densely populated areas, with disorderly structures and a way of life that centers on the day-to-day.

But Mother Nature has also been very kind, and you can find deserted beaches, lakes and mountains. However, in order to get around in good time, the only way to travel is to rent a car. And at OK Mobility we can help you with that, as we have locations in different parts of Europe.

This way, you can reach the less touristic and more authentic areas. You will have complete freedom to move around and you can save a lot of travel time. Because, although you have to immerse yourself in a culture to truly understand it, your days are also limited.

If you start your trip in Albania, you can pick up your vehicle in Tirana. And from there, you can start your route through Albania and North Macedonia.

Route through Albania and North Macedonia by car

Day 1: Tirana and Berat (Albania)

Start your adventure in the Albanian capital, Tirana, a city that combines history and modernity and where you can pick up your rental car. Here we recommend a stroll across Skanderbeg Square and along the main boulevard. The city is full of contrasts as it preserves part of its historical heritage, so communist structures alternate with contemporary art.

And after the hustle and bustle of the city, head south to Berat, around 60 miles from the capital. It is known as the "City of a Thousand Windows", and when you take a look at the Ottoman architecture, you will need no explanation.

However, the main charm lies elsewhere: thermal pools where you can bathe even if you visit the country in winter. The surroundings are also not to be missed. The river here is protected by a canyon and before you you will see a forest, a bridge and a pool.

Day 2: Apollonia and the Albanian coast

For your second day on the route through Albania and North Macedonia, we suggest heading west to travel back in time. Apollonia preserves some Greek ruins, which is not surprising, since Greece is next door. Here there was once a Doric urban settlement and, despite the passage of time, the structures are well preserved.

Afterwards, you can take in the nature on the Albanian coast, with kilometer-long beaches with light sand and dark shades of water. The color gets lighter as you head further south. If you like curves, this road will be a lot of fun, crossing mountains, forests and small towns. We recommend stopping in Ksamil, with lower levels of tourism than other areas and unforgettable landscapes.

Day 3-4: Gjirokastra and The Blue Eye

If you head east, two spectacular sites await you on the route through Albania and North Macedonia. Gjirokastra, like Berat, is a World Heritage Site. It has cobblestone streets, stone houses and a fortress, and in the museum you can learn about the region’s history. The Blue Eye also lies nearby. The road is a dirt track, but it is worth the effort to discover this river and its beautiful deep blue color and crystalline waters. There is also a small church.

Day 5-6: Northern Albania and Lake Ohrid (North Macedonia)

After your tour of Albania, you can travel along the eastern road to North Macedonia, while enjoying these inland landscapes. A recommended stop along the way is Lake Ohrid, near the Albanian Alps. It is one of the oldest in Europe, and the city of Ohrid stands beside a cliff with some interesting monuments.

Day 7-8: Skopje and Matka Canyon

And to finish your route through Albania and North Macedonia, visit the latter’s capital, Skopje. The Stone Bridge connects the old town, where there is an Ottoman bazaar, with the newer part of the city. Here a giant statue of Alexander the Great stands out in the main square. From Skopje, don't miss an excursion to the Matka Canyon, only 9 miles away. You can explore caves, go hiking or enjoy a boat ride on its waters.
