Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules
Cape Spartel is only 10-12 miles away from Tangier. This is the exact point where the waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. Although you won't notice anything particularly strange on the water's surface, what does catch your eye is the lighthouse at the tip. From there, the views are quite beautiful. A short distance away are the Caves of Hercules, which are famous for an opening to the sea that resembles the shape of the African continent. It is a short trip, perfect for a half-day. It covers beach, sea and nature, without having to go too far away.
Asilah
If you head about 30 miles south of Tangier, you will reach Asilah. It is a coastal city with Mediterranean charm. Its medina is well maintained, there are ramparts, street art, beaches within walking distance and a good atmosphere for a leisurely stroll. Depending on how much time you have, leaving early to spend the day there, enjoying the sea, the coastal air and the brightly-decorated white architecture, is a solid plan.
Tétouan
Tétouan is about an hour's drive from Tangier, with a distance of approximately 40-45 miles. Its medina has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and it retains a very marked Andalusian architecture. It has craft markets if you fancy picking up some souvenirs, good local cuisine and a quieter atmosphere than other cities. Here you can learn a little about the history of the region and alternate that with your shopping.
Chefchaouen
One of the most popular road trips from Tangier is the one that takes you to Chefchaouen, also known as the blue city. It lies in the Rif Mountains, about 70 miles away, so you will need between two and two and a half hours to get there, depending on the road. You can spend a day there and continue on to another stop or spend the night there. Its most striking feature is that its streets are painted entirely in blue. But there are also quiet markets, gardens, museums and, in the surrounding area, mountains where you can go hiking.
Fez
The last of the road trips from Tangier takes you to Fez, although you can also opt for other cities in the north of the country. Fez is the next great imperial city, with one of the largest medinas in the world, a complex history and striking craftsmanship. Since the distance is greater, you will need to leave early, unless you are staying in one of the above cities to save time. As it is situated further inland, this city presents a different face than the previous stops.
