You can't even imagine the surprises that await you near Split. About 200 kilometers from this beautiful Croatian city there is a hidden paradise near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. These are the Plitvice lakes, which lie in the center of Croatia. Plitvice Lakes National Park is in the heart of the country and welcomes more than one million visitors every year. And it is only logical, considering that this park offers visitors 16 lakes, which are connected to each other and have spectacular waterfalls. This is one of the favorite spots for photographers and nature lovers.

Discover the beauty of the Plitvice Lakes

Imagine you are walking across the wooden footbridges to tour the park and enjoy its fauna and flora. Stop dreaming and get started. It is very easy to get to Plitvice from Split. You can choose from two roads if you go by car. The shortest route takes roughly two and a half hours. This route will take you along the E65 and E75 motorways. However, if you want to enjoy the ride by car and are not in a hurry, you can drive along the A1 and D1 motorways, which pass through the interior of Dalmatia and historic towns such as Sinj. The views on this route are more beautiful, but the downside is the three and a half hours it takes to reach your destination.

Don't forget that these beautiful lakes attract so many visitors that there are a limited number of tickets to enter. Therefore, it is a very good idea to book your ticket online at least one day in advance. The entrance fee varies according to the season and ranges from 11 euros in January, February, March, November and December, to 24 euros in May and October and 40 euros in the high season, which is the months of June, July, August and September. This is the price if you buy the ticket before 4:00 pm. If you buy it after that time, the price drops to 26.50 euros.

You have several options to visit these lakes. The best way is to take a guided tour so that an expert can show you the details that otherwise you would not see. The guide will take you to the best places. You will be able to walk through the upper lakes, hear the impressive sound of the waterfalls or go through the caves in the area. The guide will explain how these marvelous lakes were formed and how they are constantly changing. In addition, you will learn about aspects such as the biodiversity of the area, you can board a boat to sail on the lakes and ride a train that will take you back to the park entrance.

Hidden wonders in the Plitvice Lakes

However, if your entrepreneurial spirit has been awakened and you want to enjoy a private tour with your friends, you can take the reins and explore this stunning Croatian National Park. Unguided tours are perfect. Once inside the park you can spend the day having a fantastic excursion at your own pace. You can walk along the trails and over the wooden bridges. These bridges connect the waterfalls. You can take advantage of the opportunity to take some magnificent pictures at your own pace without anyone telling you how long you are staying in each place.

The park has four main trails and seven routes, perfectly designed so that you can get to know the most attractive places in the park. Depending on the time you decide to invest in this natural space, you can choose between visiting the most attractive places or discovering other less well-known parts. One thing you really shouldn’t miss is Veliki Slap, the highest waterfall in Croatia. It is no less than 78 meters high. It is one must-see natural wonder on your visit to the Plitvice Lakes.
