The capital of Italy exudes charm on all sides. This cosmopolitan city is home to an enormous number of works of art scattered throughout its streets, as well as extraordinary architecture thousands of years old. If you want to have time to see everything during your trip, discover how to get around Rome!

Why go to Rome?

This city is the best representative today of what the Roman Empire was like. Also known as the Eternal City, it really is an open museum, and as well as bringing you closer to thousands of years of history, what you see will also remain in your memory for many more. Rome is simply magnificent!

Some of the most outstanding points of interest are the Colosseum, which is an impressive amphitheater with capacity for 60,000 spectators. Right in the centre of the city, part of its structure has perished over the years, but it is still impressive, especially when you think that this is where the gladiator fights that we have seen so many times on the big screen actually took place.

If you still want to see something similar, the Theatre of Marcellus is comparable, but in a smaller size.

Other treasures are the Arch of Constantine, 21 meters high and 26 meters wide, decorated with wonderful reliefs; the Palatine and the Roman Forum, with ruins of a multitude of structures, such as palaces, temples, arches and columns; St. Peter's Basilica, which is the largest Catholic temple to date, or the Trevi Fountain, where you should not miss the opportunity to throw in your coin. Tradition has it that one will bring you back to the city and two will allow you to find love.

Along with all these architectural gems, we cannot forget the museums, both the Vatican Museums, where you can find works of art such as the frescoes of The Creation of Adam and The Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo orthe Bramante staircase, and the Capitoline Museums, which are the oldest public museum in existence.

How should you get around in Rome?

With so many gems to see, you're probably wondering what the best option is for getting around Rome. Well, as in any European city, you have several options, which we describe for you below.

Metro

The city's metro lines run very well andcover some 60 kilometers, but only two of the three lines run through the center. And in order to protect the city's architecture and archaeological sites, they do not stop at the most outstanding attractions. It is therefore effective for getting around Rome if your accommodation is outside the city centre.

Bus

Buses are an alternative to the subway, but there is also something to keep in mind. Rome's traffic is known for being chaotic andpublic transport for not being very punctual. If you are not in a hurry, it can be interesting for medium distances.

Tramway

The third option for getting around Rome is the streetcar. As it has its own circuit, it is not affected by traffic, although it does not go to the main attractions, as is the case with the subway.

Motorbike

One transportation option that will allow you to avoid all of the above inconveniences are motorcycles. In addition, as we have also seen in movies such as La Dolce Vita, Roman Holiday or Under the Tuscan Sun, this means of transport is a classic in Italy, and for good reason!

Scooters have become the most common means of transportation, as they allow you to avoid queues, they can park almost anywhere and with them you can reach all the major tourist attractions.

Keep in mind that this city is full of visitors all year round, which means that you will probably have to queue to get into many attractions. If you hire a motorbike in Rome, you will save the time it will take you to get from one place to another and you will be able to dedicate it to what really matters, which is to enjoy the attractions of this beautiful city and its best restaurants. Let's not forget that Rome is also famous for its gastronomy!

Bicycles and skateboards

A similar option is to opt for bicycles and skateboards, whose use is also increasing in this city. The positive part is that they are better for the environment, but the negative part is that you will waste energy unnecessarily. Rome is gigantic!
