This year's heat wave looks set to last throughout the summer. Experts warn that, with climate change, this type of situation, in which temperatures exceed 40ºC in a large part of the territory for several days in a row, will become more and more common. If you're tired of the heat, here are some alternative holiday destinations where you'll be much cooler.

Destinations in Spain to escape the heat wave

Los Alcornocales

If you thought you necessarily had to go north to enjoy lower temperatures, we can confirm that this is not the case. The Los Alcornocales National Park between the provinces of Malagaand Cadiz, is not only a beautiful and little-known natural place, it is also a place with lower temperatures.

Its peculiar orography, the humidity that accumulates in the Mediterranean forest, and its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar, mean that the average temperature in this area during the summer is around 20º C.

The Pyrenees

You can choose between Catalonia, Navarre or Aragon. If you are passionate about mountains, we are very close to one of the most important mountain ranges in Europe. You know that bivouacking is not allowed in many areas, but you can stay in beautiful rural hotels and campsites.

Although daytime temperatures may be a bit higher, you will certainly need to cover up at night. In fact, if you do any trekking or hiking routes, you are likely to encounter some snow on your way.

Burgos

This is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, with a historical heritage that is well worth visiting. In the region of Castilla y León, the continental Mediterranean climate ensures that temperatures remain fairly moderate even during the period when the sun shines most brightly. The average temperature in summer is around 23º C during the day.

Griegos

Teruel also exists, and in summer it is a perfect vacation destination. Because in this region we find Griegos, the second highest municipality in Spain, located at 1,604 meters above sea level, in the middle of the Sierra de Albarracín, but which you can easily reach by car.

A quiet place to forget about stress and the heat wave. Surrounded by a spectacular landscape and with a gastronomy that encourages you to return.

Cercedilla

This is one of the best known villages in the Sierra Madrileña. In winter it receives hundreds of visitors who come to enjoy the snow, and in summer it has tourists from all over Spain who come there in search of some fresh air. In addition, it is a perfect location for excursions in the area.

The average temperature is around 20º C during the day, and the minimum in midsummer can reach 11º C once the sun goes down.

International destinations to escape the heat wave

Chile

If you prefer to cross the pond and do it with warm clothes in your suitcase, Chile can be a perfect destination, because while here we are in summer, there they are in the middle of winter. This makes this country a good alternative for snow sports lovers, who will be able to enjoy themselves in the Andes.

In addition, western Patagonia offers spectacular winter scenery, without the typical winds that are so annoying during the summer.

Iceland

As you can probably imagine, summer in Iceland is rather short. In fact, if you plan your trip towards the end of August, you will most likely encounter weather that, while not wintry, is starting to get quite cool.

The good thing about visiting Iceland during the summer is that you can visit the entire island, something that is not possible in winter due to the snow. In addition, during this time of year the sun is in the sky for almost 24 hours.

If you like nature, this country has an abundance of waterfalls and volcanoes. You can also practice sports such as kayaking or caving.

Scotland

They have rarely heard of a heatwave in Scotland, and even less so in the southern Highlands area further north of Inverness. This is the most secluded area of the country with the fewest tourists, but it is perfect for enjoying the unique scenery and the best seafood.

It is a good destination for those who love hiking and biking, and also for bird lovers, because there are many species to observe in this area.

In Spain, or abroad, you can find cooler destinations that will make you forget about the heat wave. Do you want to enjoy them to the fullest? We are here to help you!
