Planning a getaway near Murcia and looking for some tips? In the surroundings of the regional capital of Murcia there are a number of options, whether you fancy the beach, mountains, charming villages or gastronomic routes. And all of these are less than an hour's drive away.

The Murcia region is blessed with a privileged climate all year round, so practically any time is a good time for a road trip. Perhaps the most famous is the Mar Menor, but you will also find inland mountain ranges, castles, salt flats, coves and vineyards.

Here are some of the essential destinations for a getaway near Murcia, take note!

Cartagena, a must on a getaway near Murcia

Only 45 minutes from the regional capital, Cartagena is a must-visit. In fact, it is probably the city with the most history in the region. Its Roman past is still very evident, thanks to its Roman Theatre, one of the best preserved in Spain, and an urban area full of archaeological traces.

Strolling through the old town is a great idea, because you will find the main street, the Palacio Consistorial, small shops, terraces and modernist buildings. Pro tip: Go up in the panoramic lift that goes to the Castillo de la Concepción and admire the breathtaking views of the harbour.

And if you like the sea, these options should not be missed:

  • Visit the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQVA).
  • Take a boat ride on the bay.
  • If the weather is good, the beach of Cala Cortina is quite close to the city.

Sierra Espuña: nature, hiking routes and villages

Prefer to head to the mountains during your getaway near Murcia? If so, the Sierra Espuña is the perfect place. It sits just over 25 miles from Murcia, and is a perfect natural park to disconnect, breathe the fresh air and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Spending time here means complete disconnection from the noise of the city. But you can also hike through pine forests, climb to the snow pits and, if you are lucky, see some mountain goats. In winter, this area is usually rather quiet and cold, while in summer it is the perfect escape from the high temperatures.

In the surroundings of this mountain range you will find beautiful towns and villages like Aledo and Totana. If you visit them, a stroll through the historic centre is the best option, but we also recommend you try the local cuisine or buy some handmade pottery.

La Manga and Cabo de Palos, two coastal jewels

We have looked at urban areas and mountains, now it's time to discover some of the best things to do along the region's coast. La Manga del Mar Menor is where many people choose to visit for their holiday, because it is a tongue of land that separates two seas. It is quite a peculiar area, ideal for water sports, biking or just a swim at the beach.

If you are looking for a more maritime atmosphere in your getaway near Murcia, go straight to Cabo de Palos. It has one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the Mediterranean, and its waters are famous among divers for the richness of the seabed.

And, of course, the food here is wonderful. Don't leave Murcia without trying a good caldero del Mar Menor, a traditional rice dish with fish that will have you yearning to come back for more.

Caravaca de la Cruz, tourism and history in one

Finally, your getaway near Murcia must include Caravaca de la Cruz, a medieval city with one of the most important sanctuaries in the Christian world. The castle and basilica there dominate the landscape, and they are also places with stories to tell.

If you go at the beginning of May, you can experience its Fiestas de la Cruz with the famous Caballos del Vino (Wine Horses). It is also ideal for lovers of inland tourism, because during your getaway near Murcia you can follow cycling routes, stay in a rural cottage or enjoy cultural visits.

Now that you know all there is to see, all you need to do is rent a car with OK Mobility in Murcia. You can pick it up at Murcia Airport (RMU) and enjoy the region at your own pace.
