If you are looking to take a road trip in Morocco, do not miss this driving tour from Casablanca. You will visit all the must-see places and a number of other special spots along the way.

Why travel to Casablanca?

Casablanca is Morocco's economic capital and one of its most dynamic cities. Its architecture is a fusion of French colonialism with modern skyscrapers and traditional bazaars. It is therefore a most interesting stop, with highlights such as the Hassan II Mosque and its 689-foot minaret, or the La Corniche promenade.

As well as its monuments, it is an excellent starting point for exploring the rest of the country with a driving tour from Casablanca. As it is relatively large and varied, renting a car is the best way to get around freely. In addition to being able to visit places like Fez, Marrakech and the desert, you will not be dependent on public transportation schedules, which can slow you down and affect your trip planning.

Moreover, there are direct flights from a number of European destinations, so it is easy to get there and start your adventure. If you feel like combining cultures, you can also fly to Tangier or cross by ferry from southern Spain.

5-day driving tour from Casablanca

On this driving tour from Casablanca you will visit some of the most important spots in Morocco. We have fused historic cities with mountain and desert landscapes so that you will leave with the satisfaction of having seen almost everything this country has to offer.

Day 1: Casablanca - Rabat - Fez

The day begins with you discovering Casablanca. Enjoy the Hassan II Mosque, Mohamed V square and the Central Market. Then, hit the road and drive one hour to Rabat, the country’s capital city. There it is worth visiting the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas, with spectacular views of the Atlantic.

In the afternoon, follow the road to Fez, Morocco's most fascinating cultural city. Its medina is a World Heritage Site and seems to be of a different time, with labyrinthine streets full of souks, tanneries and historic madrasas. If you want an authentic experience, spend the night in a traditionalriad.

Day 2: Fez - Volubilis - Meknes - Midelt

Spend the morning sightseeing in Fez, exploring the Chouwara tannery, the Bou Inania Madrasa and the Royal Palace. Or at least get your strength back with a good breakfast to continue your driving tour from Casablanca.

Afterwards, head to Volubilis; the best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, with spectacular mosaics. From there, you can reach Meknes, one of the country’s imperial cities, famous for the majestic Bab Mansour gate and its medina. You will find it much less chaotic than Fez. The afternoon will be spent on the road, gradually making your way up towards Midelt, in the Atlas Mountains. It is a good spot to spend the night and rest before the great journey to the desert.

Day 3: Midelt - Ifrane - Cedar Forest - Merzouga

In the morning, pass through Ifrane. It has an alpine style and fresh air, hence it being nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco". We recommend you travel through the Cedar Forest of Azrou, which is home to the friendly Barbary macaques.

The route continues through the Ziz valley, where oases of palm trees announce your proximity to the desert. At the end of the day you will reach Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara. Here you can ride a camel and cross the dunes of Erg Chebbi. For the night, choose a Berber camp and contemplate the starry sky and discover the stories of this people.

Day 4: Merzouga - Todra Gorge - Dades Valley

On your fourth day, get up nice and early to see the sunrise in the desert. After breakfast, return to Merzouga and continue the route to Rissani, which is famous for its traditional market. Continue to the Todra Gorge, a canyon with vertical walls up to almost 1000 feet high. There you can take a walk and snap some spectacular pictures.

Then, continue to the Dades Valley, a deep ravine and gorge known for its peculiar rock formations and the presence of Berber villages. Here you will spend the night in a kasbah overlooking the valley.

Day 5: Dades Valley - Ait Ben Haddou - Marrakech

The last day of the driving tour from Casablanca begins by crossing the High Atlas Mountains. But first, visit Ouarzazate or the gateway to the desert. There you will find the fortified village Kasbah Taourirt, as well as some film studios. You can also stop at Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous adobe ksar in the country because it has been the setting for movies and series like "Gladiator" and "Game of Thrones". Finally, cross the mountain pass of Tizi n'Tichka to reach Marrakech.
