Greece has thousands of corners to explore. So many, in fact, that you would need a particularly long holiday to get to know this beautiful country in depth. If you don't have that much time, you can make sure you see some of the most iconic sights with this drive from Athens to Cape Sounion.

Athens: the journey begins

The Greek capital is a great example of modernity, but what really catches visitors' attention is its history. There are so many must-see places, including:

  • The Acropolis.
  • The Parthenon.
  • Plaka neighbourhood.
  • Monastiraki Square.
  • Syntagma Square.

To see everything in detail it is advisable to spend a minimum of three to five days there. Afterwards, you can start your trip from Athens to Cape Sounion. Head south on Syngrou Avenue. Although city traffic can be a bit chaotic, as soon as you leave the urban centre you will notice a big difference and your driving experience will be much calmer.

Glyfada: glamour by the sea

The first point of interest on your coastal driving route is this seaside suburb that is very popular for its cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is full of luxury shops and bars where you can enjoy a coffee or a drink overlooking the sea.

After a short visit, take the car and keep following the road, which at this point becomes Poseidonos Avenue.

Voula and Vouliagmeni: must-sees on the drive from Athens to Cape Sounion

Try to plan your route with enough time to make a long stop in Voula. This municipality stands out for its relaxed atmosphere and its beaches, but the most interesting thing lies on the outskirts: Vouliagmeni Lagoon, a small thermal lake nestled between rock formations.

You can take a walk around the lake, enjoy its therapeutic waters and round off the experience with a delicious coffee.

Varkiza: the start of the truly spectacular

Varkiza is a small Greek seaside town that you can enjoy a quick walk around. But its importance lies in it being where the most interesting part of your road trip begins because the coastal road you have been following begins to twist between hills and cliffs, without ever straying from the Aegean Sea.

The stretch between Varkiza and Sounion is especially interesting because you will find: quiet coves, panoramic viewpoints and taverns with terraces by the sea. Time seems to stand still here, so don't hesitate to make as many stops as you deem necessary.

Anavyssos: pure local charm

Although it seems that Athens is now far behind, if you follow the route from the capital without stopping, you can reach this charming town in about 45 minutes.

It is a less touristy area, perfect for a leisurely stroll or to enjoy the beach. Dare to try the sweet treats from its traditional bakeries and do not hesitate to stop for lunch in one of its family-run taverns.

Legrena: one last stop before the temple

This small community has gone almost unnoticed by tourism and is a very quiet place. In fact, here you can visit beaches that are practically virgin.

After this short stop, it's time to return to the car and complete the final stretch to see the temple of Poseidon.

Cape Sounion: you have reached your destination

Cape Sounion is located around 40 miles from Athens, at the southern tip of the Attica region. Once there, it won't be long before you see the temple of Poseidon. This architectural jewel, built in the 5th century B.C., stands on a promontory that juts out into the sea.

It is in a spectacular location, surrounded by cliffs and with a 360-degree panoramic view of the Aegean Sea. On a clear day, you can see nearby islands such as Kea and Kythnos.

The famous British poet Lord Byron was so impressed that he engraved his name on the columns of the temple, which can still be seen today.

If you're lucky enough to find yourself there late in the day, you can see one of the most beautiful sunsets in all of Greece.
