There are innumerable treasures hidden in the Middle East, and places that leave you speechless when you visit them. Without a doubt, the incredible deserts in this region are among them. In this article we tell you how to get from Abu Dhabi to the Rub al Khali desert, one of the largest sand deserts in the world. Take note!

What is the Rub al Khali desert?

The first thing to highlight is that the Rub al Khali desert is also known as the 'Empty Quarter'. This name is not accidental, but is due to the fact that it is an area located between four countries (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, United Arab Emirates and Oman) where there is nothing but miles of sand.

In fact, the Rub al Khali desert covers an area of 650,000 square kilometres, which is larger than Spain and Portugal put together. It is also highly valued due to its large quantities of oil.

When is the best time to visit the Rub al Khali desert?

If you are planning a trip to this desert, the best time to go is in winter. During the summer, temperatures can reach up to 55ºC. On the other hand, between late autumn and early spring, the temperature is really quite pleasant, and you can enjoy your trip much more.

How to get from Abu Dhabi to the Rub al Khali desert

The immensity of this desert makes it one of the most attractive tourist destinations for visitors to this part of the world. Due to its geography, the best way to visit it is to rent a car in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. In fact, we recommend renting a 4x4 for getting around the desert.

Route from Abu Dhabi to Moreeb Dune

From Abu Dhabi, the shortest route is approximately 140 miles, which translates into a little more than two and a half hours by car, although it depends on exactly where you want to stop. The best route would be as follows:

  • Leaving Abu Dhabi, head towards the E11, the longest road in the United Arab Emirates.
  • Once on this road, you will pass the city's industrial zone and head towards Saudi Arabia.
  • You can make a stop at Al Semiyyah, an interesting beach where fishermen gather.
  • A little further on, you will reach the E45, and you can make a stop in Madinat Zayed, one of the few cities near the end of the desert.
  • Finally, you will reach the E90, where you can take the small winding road that leads to the Moreeb Dune, one of the largest sand dunes in the world, 300 metres tall and with a 50-degree incline. This is where we recommend leaving the car.

Western route from Abu Dhabi

Another option to travel through the Rub al Khali desert if you have a little more time is from the west. To do so, drive from Abu Dhabi to Al Batha and take Highway 95, one of the roads that crosses the desert.

On this route, you will find a petrol station when you arrive in Subaytah, but keep in mind that the drive is about 8 hours.

Eastern route from Abu Dhabi

Your third option is to go east from Abu Dhabi. In this case, you will reach Al Ain, one of the largest cities in the United Arab Emirates and definitely worth a stop.

One of the most outstanding tourist attractions are the oases in the middle of the city, a landscape that is a stark contrast to the desert. From here, take the E95, which will take you through different parts of the desert, like where the protected Arabian Oryx roam.

How to rent a car in Abu Dhabi

As we have mentioned already, renting a car in Abu Dhabi is one of the best options for touring the Rub al Khali desert. Although it is always advisable to rent a 4x4, it is not essential in order to travel through the desert, since the roads are, for the most part, quite well adapted.
